Finally got my RPAL!

Should I now apply for a LTATT before I actually own a handgun?
Do I need a STATT before I can get a LTATT?

I've seen examples of the applications and they suggest to leave blank the list of restricteds.

It looks like provinces treat these differently so in my case, I'm looking for BC info.

IN ONTARIO: (sorry should have read bit)

Buy gun. You can only get ATT to get it home. You need to join gun club to move it from home. At least, on Ontario, to any certified range. Cant think of better excuse to buy gun!

Also in Ontario. They (CFC) want the serial number before you get your ATT. I also don't know if Ontario issues "all restricted firearms owned or in the possession of.....", or if they have "Serial # 12345, Ruger 9mm, between home and range by reasonably direct route" ATT's...

Call the 800 number and ask if there's anything you should do or need to provide before purchasing to expedite your application.

For Ontario people (and possibly other provinces); Let your club apply for your LTATT. I was told by our club secratary "usually 3 days, rarely longer" once she has all the info. Since the clubs are in contact with CFO's frequently, they develop a relationship. Use it to your advantage.

In BC where you live you need the ltatt before the cfo will do a restricted transfer to you. They also want you to fax your club membership too for the ltatt. You can buy a restricted but they will simply put the transfer on hold till the paperwork is done.

And to get the LTATT you need to be a member (or state intention of becoming a member) of a certain gun club. The easiest thing to do if you don't know which club is to get the Silvercore membership. Read here. They will give you the LTATT form filled out so that it applies generally to all of the restricted guns and gun clubs -- this is what you were referring to.

Its a bit of a catch 22 you need a gun to get the att but you can't get one until you have the gun. Here in BC you can't get a ATT if you don't own a gun. So to answer your questions, no you have to buy a gun first (physically pay for it at the store). The store then will apply on your behalf for the transfer and a temporary ATT. However neither one will be approved until you or your gun club submits proof of your membership for a long term ATT. The best way for a first time purchase is to come to the gun store with your gun club membership, pay for the gun and let them submit photocopies of your RPAL and Membership along with the transfer paperwork. You8 should be picking up your new gun within a week.

I just went through this scenario as well as my son-inlaw. It took me 5 weeks before I could receive a gun I purchased and my son-inlaw waited a month for his that he won in a rod and gun club raffle draw. We both went about it wrong and could have saved a major PITA by doing it right the first time. As soon as you get your RPAL you apply for your LTATT and supply a copy of your range membership. You are issued an LTATT with no registered firearms listed on it and it is normally issued in 8 to 10 days. Once you have your LTATT the seller applies for an ATT. If you purchase from a dealer and they contact the CFO directly it can be processed within 24 hours.

Exactly what I did. Mailed it on Monday, recieved it the following week on wednesday in the mail.

Thanks for all the info.
I sent in my LTATT application over a week ago...April 28.
But I couldn't wait.....I bought a handgun from a sponsor on Thursday April 30!
So both applications are in their hands now.
Hope I didn't jump the gun (pun) and now I'm in the 3 month waiting list pile!

I'll keep you informed.
