Should I buy a CZ455 lux or save and get a less expensive rifle?

Hi,

After lots of reading, video-watching, picture-gazing, and going through a Marlin 39a phase, I've taken a liking to the CZ 455 Lux Bolt-Action. However, the only place I can buy it (that I'm aware of, anyway -- I live in Toronto, On) is at Cabelas, and I'd have to order it online. They sell it for $549.99 -- this price is bloated (seen it much cheaper in the US, and I've noticed Cabelas is generally more expensive than Bass Pro for guns), and in addition, I would have to have it sent via bonded courier and am looking at adding another $60 or so in shipping fees to the cost. Alternately, I can walk into Bass pro and get something like the Ruger 10/22 or Savage Mark II G .22 LR, or something similar, for a lot less money. I guess my question is, should I pay through the nose and get the CZ 455 Lux, or get something a lot less expensive? Is the CZ that much better?

Any opinions would be appreciated, as it'll be my first gun. Thanks!

You could simply purchase a 455 Lux from Ellwood Epps for $527. Epps is a forum sponsor that has some 455 Lux rifles listed. And you could have it mailed to you, you don't need to send it by courier.

Yes, they are easily worth the extra cost. If you buy what's cheap instead of what you really want, you won't be satisfied.

Or if you save up a few dollars more, see if you can find a 453 Lux. It has a single set trigger. However the 453 is no longer in production, and supplies will disappear pretty quick.

I would guess that it really depends what you want the rifle for. The CZ is a finer product than either the Ruger or Savage. As has been said you can probably find any of those rifles in the EE and save money.

Once you get the CZ it's hard to not like it. I have the 452 Lux and love shooting it with the irons offhand. Very accurate. I love the ability to choose 25, 50, 75, 100 meters up to 200 meters on the irons.
With a scope it will sometimes get me 1" 5 shot groups at 100 yds with Federal Champions ammo on a benchrest.

Agreed. I also have a 452 Lux.

I was told that they stopped making them so I picked one up. I'm not sure if its true or but I got one anyways.:D

It has very nice iron sights. Shoots more accurately then I can most of the time. The action is a lot nicer then a Savage.

The CZ is a quality firearm. Most rimfires are cheaply made.

I'd say that my CZ action after 2000 rds has become very silky smooth. It feels like an older BRNO now. Gets better with age. :)

I've read on Rimfirecentral.com that they may be bringing back the 452's. Someone got an inside scoop from CZ. Sometimes change isn't always for the better.

IMO, buy a CZ now.

452, 453 or 455, new or used, doesn't matter.

You will not regret spending the money for a quality well made and accurate rifle. You can always find a Savage MkII (well the higher grades aren't cheap...:D), or Marlin 981T later.

My first .22 rifles here in Canada were a 10/22 and CIL Anschutz single shot.

Then came my CZ452 Style and Varmint. I sold the former two rifles, but still have the CZs and several recent Savages/Marlins and a couple of older Winchesters. The CZs are my favorites, to shoot and to fondle.

Thanks again for all the feedback. I definitely don't want to buy something I'm going to want to quickly replace, so I'll definitely go for a CZ...unless I can find an Anshultz! I suppose that's a topic for another post, but I've had a very hard time finding an Anshultz anywhere in Canada. A new CZ should suffice though. :)

Former Anschutz owner here, had back in the 80s/90s a 1416 with double set trigger and a 1415. Double set trigger was really sweet, regular trigger on the 1415 was so so.

Unless you go with a 54 Annie for $1K plus for a used one, IMO the CZs will keep you happy enough. Annies come up on the EE often enough, most sell quickly though.

If you like set triggers, get the CZ453.

Accuracy of the CZs is similar to the lower end Annies, IMO. I think ammo choice is more important than rifle make, if looking at CZ and Annies.

My first gun was a 10/22 which never compared to my father's beat up Annie bolt. Once I got my CZ 452 silhouette it sure felt the good old days with that Anschutz. You can drop gophers at will all day.
