I decided I wanted to buy a 7mm-08 rifle and I found one. Do you think this is a good deal?
Savage Model 99
Clip magazine
custom made stainless steel barrel
Burris mounts and rings
Silver Tasco 3-9x40 scope
The gun is supposed to be in perfect shape, he wants $500

In perfect shape? It's a bit pricey, but really, the guy's losing money on the rebarrel job. I'd probably fork out the money. The 7mm-08 would be a great chambering to have a 99 in; too bad Savage made so few.

posibel

I thing you can proble find a better gun for the money then a 99 a good used ruger or remington can be had for the same money and you end up with omthing still worth somthing when u are done with it .my 2 cents DUTCH

As above posters have said, depends on the "custom barrel". More info is required, or better yet, shoot it to find out. Otherwise, pretty decent deal. I had a 99 in 308 and it was a nice rifle.

Nice rifle. Good caliber. Are both suitable for your shooting needs?

Excellent rings and bases. For eastern hunting I would change scope to a quality fixed 3X scope.

Any replacement barrel should be at least as good as the factory barrel and probably better, but I think a stainless on a 99 would look weird.

A chacun son goût

See if you can find out some information as to who did the rebarrel. Shooting it first is a must and inspect the cases with calipers, compare the info from the case to sized cases or reloading data. Do your homework first that way there will be no surprises later when it's too late.

Model 99

That's a perfectly acceptable deal if it shoots well as stated above. My wife loves her m 99 .308 and I'm always pleasantly surprised when I shoot some groups to sight it in each season. These things shoot very well, great grocery-getters and a 7mm-08 is a fine choice if the rebarrel was correct.

Sounds good to me, try it and see.

i would buy it. if its a good shooter and you don't like the two tone look guncoat it. 7 08 would be a great calibre in a 99.

I've been entertaining for a couple years the idea of looking for a suitable donor 99 to have rebarreled to 7mm-08. That's how I got my 99 in .358. Anyway, once you confirm that the rebarrel was done properly, grab it up, or someone else sure will. The rebarrel likely cost more than the asking price. As someone already suggested, gun-kote or a similar product will look after the stainless if you don't like it. I had the metalwork on my .358 powder coated...might be a bit more pricey, but it's very durable.

Savage 99 in 7mm08

If the job has been performed by a good smith I can't think of a better gun to rebarrel to 7mm08.
Purchasing the barrel and having it put on would probably cost an easy $300 ++. I would go for it because I am a 7 X 57 and 7mm08 fan. I love my Remington 700 BDL, I bought a 22" Remington Mountain Rifle stainless light contour barrel and had it put on and it weighs about a half pound more than a Model 7 Remington.
I have two more 7mm08 barrels in my shop both are Remington, one is a medium weight 24" SS, and the other is a blued BDL 22". I might run across a Remington with a ruined 308 or 243 barrel and have it converted to 7-08.
Buy it and then give us a range report, and show us some pictures.

I have a Model 99 in 358 that I haven't shot yet, and I am dying to take it to the range. Funny thing it has a receiver all engraved but the stocks has stamped checkering like something Winchester Cooey did to their model 600's.
