Should I keep Glock 17 or Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm?

A fellow I shoot with has shot the barrel out of his M&P9 in about 20,000 rounds... He still loves it but can't compete with it and getting a new barrel is proving...problematic. fwiw

In the torture test run by Todd Green the pistol exceeded 60,000 rounds with no loss of accuracy, how did your friend shoot the barrel out in only 20,000?? Time to stop using steel wool as a bore brush. :D

I'm not sure if S&W has a guarantee for barrel life, but with a relatively new product I can imagine there are some irregularities in manufacturing standards. Maybe he recieved an early version that wasn't quite up to snuff - dunno.
I think any life expectancy of a barrel is pure estimates, some last longer while others not so much.
The pistol in question had/has served 2+ years shooting IDPA/IPSC with the bulk of that lighter training/production loads. I believe all jacketed. Maybe he'll chime in?

That slot is to allow debris dirt and whatever the hell else you get in your gun, out. Not for plugs. Though some people put the plugs in to keep that same dirt and grim from getting in. Depends on your AO I suppose.

Sounds pretty good I never thought about it that way. :)

Keep them both, melt them down and make a dunce cap out of them. Then buy a Sig and you'll be able to say to yourself, "So this is what a real gun feels like"!
