I have a remington 700 in 17 rem. I am wondering what the cost wld be to rebarrel it with a facory barrell vs rechambering it in 204. My dad built this rifle for me when i was 12 before he passed away so i would like to keep it alive. The current barrel is most likely shot out. A few thousand 17 and it is keyholing. It has also been cleaned.

I dont know anything about the cost. but if you can have the original barrel re chambered i would go that path. better to have the rifle slightly modified but with a second life then it as is and unusable.

If you can find a rem takeoff from someone they usually go for 100-150 bucks. Getting it re-barrelled with a match grade blank from a smith will be around 750. The heart of the gun is still there. Your father would respect and love the fact that you shot it till it wouldn't shoot anymore and then breathed new life into it.

It cannot be rechambered in .204.
It could be rebarrelled. If you can find a new take off barrel that would be one option. Probably the least expensive, because the barrel would not be all that much. Fitting might or might not add a lot to the cost depending on what had to be done. You might get lucky, and the thing would screw on and headspace. For a custom barrel, find the cost of the blank, and add $200-$250.

Keyholing is caused by over sized barrels, undersized bullets and sometime too low velocities. Several thousand rounds should not have worn the barrel enough to cause it.
Where you are matters somewhat. Epp's wants $150.00 plus the cost of barrel for a ready to install barrel. $225.00 plus the cost of barrel for a blank. Most smithies should be close to that.

I took it to a smith who says there is throat errossion and maybe a scratch a few inches into the rifling. I yhink recrowning may be a quick fix but maybe the barrel is simply shot out. I dont see this rifle having more than 2000 rounds thru it. He is going to keep it and have a peak. May be a money pit from here on in. He seemed honest so hopefukkyba crown will do the trick or i might need to retire the rifle.

17 Remington is a hyper-speed round. I'm surprised it lasted 2000 rounds.

Match barrel is $400-$450. You have one of the best platform actions to build off of. I would spend the money +-$700 and rebarrel it and keep it doing what your dad intended it to do when he had it built for you----shoot acurate and for you to enjoy that. If you reload there are many interesting choices with the bolt face you have to work with

Bit of a long shot, but see if Gravel Agency (through your Remington Dealer) can find you an original replacement barrel.
I found one for a buddy through them in 35 Whelen for a 7600 not too long ago.

For the additional cost, have the action trued and install a custom stainless match grade barrel in a suitable caliber of your choice and enjoy some fantastic accuracy for a long while.
