The recent post offering a $110 AR receiver has me thinking...

i checked the price on the remaining parts and this looks like a trap. it seems that the cost could far exceed the price of something pre-built.

Also, is this a project that someone with moderate technical ability should be able to complete?

yes. Yes you should.

If you build it, it's YOURS, and YOU know it, inside out, backwards and upside down. It lives and breathes with your hands, and there will be nothing in the world that will compare to it.

Or you could buy something that was slapped together by some 6 year old in Cambodia and finally get it almost right, almost.

Your call man :)

AR builds can get very expensive . You could always just buy a factory gun and take it completely apart . And then build it again , if you want the experience . My first build cost me 3 k plus and would be a hard sell on EE for 1800

IT'S A TRAP!!! Once you start down the slippery slope of building your own it just gets worse and worse. Seriously though, it's crazy addictive but I wouldn't have it any other way now. Don't think about it...do it!

Short answer: yes.
Long answer: Depends on what your looking for. A custom match grade AR? Probably best bet would be to go custom build. Cheap tactical plinker in .223? (Ok, yes, nothing it is cheap when it comes to ARs, I know) A decent AR can be had for under $1000, with mags and accessories. (IE: Norinco)

I just picked up a palmetto lower for 125 taxes and shipping in plus a complete dpms parts kit, full upper a2 10.5 bull bbl, stock and.buffer and lower parts kit (every part needed for build) Brand new for 800 shipped from ee. So for 925 I should have a shorty ar and not a norinco for only a couple hundred bucks more but unfortunately not a flat top :( .

It is possible to assemble an fine AR from parts for reasonable cost. A lot depends on a bit of luck in sourcing the bits.
It is often said that by building one from parts that you can get exactly the configuration you need. This can certainly be the case. Often this just means that the result is just a mess of tackykewl bells, whistles and bobbleheaded dolls.
Something to consider is that not all parts are created equal. There are crap parts out there. A mishmashed assembly of Brand X parts isn't worth the time, effort and expense.

NEA are cheap too but I prefer to build my own. It's fun in itself.

Im off to see Casey Saturday to get my latest build done.

Build it yourself, then you don't end up with so many spare parts which turn into more Ar's
If you haven't the skills and tools find a group doing a build party and get help from them.

I just built 3 Ar's from spare parts from other builds ! Aaaargg !
