So I was thinking about trading my VZ 58 and a pistol I have (M+P 9mm) for an AR-15. I have somewhat recently joined the forces and I think would be benefitcial to practice with an AR style rifle. What are your opinions?

if you are in the forces there is probabley benefit to knowing the 7.62x39 round! Keep the VZ and get an AR as well. It is your trade get good at it.

Take advantage of your issue gun if you want AR practice. Wouldn't it be boring to own just one platform? Keep them both!

You'll have the use of an AR aka C7 while in the Army. Wear out their barrels and parts. Keep what you've got for something different. Later on if you want an AR you can add to the collection. I wouldn't sell or trade.
I would also use the oportunity to fire as much through their firearms as you can.

When you do decide to get an AR later on you'll know what you like and don't like about your work ones. This will help you spend your money wisely later on. Also most people don't like "work" gun triggers for their personal firearms. I know I don't. Learn on theirs, wear out their equipment and then decide what you'll enjoy shooting on your days off.

Good luck. Have fun.

like people said keep what u have, use gov. ar to practice, we paid enough tax money so you get to enjoy ! practice .... for what ?, its all for fun anyways, unless you go for a tour soon, in which case you're going to get full training regardless.

I guess it depends....if you join the reserves, you probably do not get to shoot that much anyways.

I will trade the VZ and the MP 9mm for a GOOD AR but not something along the line of Olympic arms or DPMS part guns.

JM,

What trade/classification? RegF or ResF?

Depending on what job you'll be doing and whether you're full or part time will ultimately determine what and how much you shoot. Sadly, the CF does not and can not ensure all members get equal range time. To keep my own skills up to a reasonable level, I've picked up an AR, a HP and a Norc copy of the 226 (we carry prohib 225s in my line of work so I went with a cheap and similar rest'd alternative).

Off the top though, keep what you have, save some of your paycheques (drink your first to celebrate) and buy an AR as a grad gift to yourself when you're done basic.
