Should I use surplus in a Mini-30

I have been asking asking around, and I really would like to get a mini, I have been told by a few to go with the mini-30 and shoot surplus because it's cheap as hell, a few others have said NO WAY a mini-30 is way to nice a gun to shoot surplus with, it's too dirty and unless you really really clean the gun well after use it will rust literally overnight, now I clean all my rifles every time I shoot them, but I have been told that even that will not be enough if I shoot this surplus stuff, unless it's a amazing clean job EVERY time it will rust and I don't want this, so I have been thinking of just getting a Mini-6.8 and then reloading myself to get the ammo price down, I have all the reloading stuff, just trying to decide between a mini 30 and a 6.8, the thing is ammo price if the mini 30 isn't going to get destroyed shooting surplus then great but if it will I'll just get the 6.8mm, thoughts?? Thanx for bearing with me

Clean it good after shooting?

For how dirty surplus 7.62 X 39 is my 1954 sks still looks like new because I clean it.

On the other hand my buddies one year old CZ 858 had a shell stuck in the chamber and the chamber needed cleaning by a gunsmith because he never cleaned it.

Its like everything else, just take care of your stuff.

When cleaning it, just use something with Ammonia in it (like Windex - Ammonia D). It's getting harder to find, but it works to get rid of the corrosive residue left behind after shooting.

Hope this helps.

I don't know if it's true, perhaps someone will correct me, but I've heard and read somewhere that East Bloc surplus can be hard on the Mini-30s because of weak firing pins. Can someone verify or correct?

I have a mini30 and have shot surplus whenever it was available for years. I used the same method for cleaning the mini 30 as I do for the SKS. Right after your range session strip the rifle and run hot tap water over the rifle, does not have to be boiling water. Then clean your rifle as normal with solvents and oil. My mini 30 still looks as new.

There has been no firing pin concerns that I know of with surplus as far as breaking pins. The only concerns I had with surplus and my mini 30 was light primer strikes with hard primers in surplus ammo. The fix was a set of Wolf springs, did not have a problem since they were installed

i agree whats the point if you cant shoot surplus out of it , but at the range a while back a guy had a new one and a few rounds of surplus wouldnt go off, but they did in my sks ...? bad ammo or to weak of a strike ... not sure .He sold me the rest of the case and i didnt have a miss fire .

mini14, 30

I have had and still have both. I shoot all sorts of surplus ammo, strip and clean with solvents and they are like new.

Only people who do not clean their guns destroy their guns, surplus ammo or not.
