So the Wife and I are muddling around in clay games. I got a sweet little Citori CXS but in 20ga do to my original 12 being marred on the wood slightly upon delivery and Da Wife was concerned with the heft, thanks Clay - you rock.

Now to the gist of it, two doors down lives a widower for just the last 4 years but I know for fact that he was a highly competitive clay sports participant and his name is engraved on a few trophies at our club. I have only exchanged pleasantries over the last 15yrs as they, now he seem quite private. I'm fairly certain he no longer even shoots.....

Is it bad form just to go up and knock? I'd wager he's a wealth of info and maybe some nice equipment, old is good sometimes.

I always shut the tunes off on my bike and idle out of our little cul-de-sac going to work, he can't dislike me too bad.... lol

What say Ye?

I'd go for it. Most guys like that just want someone to talk to about the old days. Just be polite and mention the club. Be up front that you just want to hear stories about his shooting days.

Sounds like you may be interested in seeing or purchasing his guns if he still has them. I'd be leery about bringing that up right away, you could get him to thinking your just after something. Some old people think that way.

With good reason...............

My own folks are that way and the majority of their friends that came from war torn Europe.....

I more would like to talk technique, what he did to make himself successful at the range. If accessories and shotguns come up after that, we will go from there.

Now to try and catch him in the front yard and truly break the ice. I know he told his other B&B neighbour where to go and how to get there when he was asked to shut off his mower for the guests breakfast lol.

I know a few crusty old trap shooters that are like that too.... heck, I might even be one myself!

I wouldn't hesitate to knock on his door and then invite him to come out to shoot at the club. Maybe all he needs is a friendly kick in the butt (or a reason to go back).
