Hi guys, I'm looking for a little guidance.

Recently purchased a Redding ultra mag press and Redding deluxe 3 die set.
This is my first time reloading.
Reloading 270WSM. Using a standard number 6 case holder.

No instructions came with the press. Ive done a little searching I the net.
I've set the press so that the shell holder just touches the bottom of the seating die at the top of the cycle.

When I ran my first bullet the case came out with a crushed shoulder. I checked the case length, thinking it need to be trimmed but it was standard. I ran half a dozen more through with the same result for each time.
I tried a little lube or anything I could think of but no luck.

I then put my friends Redding competition seating die in the press, same caliber. Set it exactly the same so the case holder touches the bottom of the die. And pressed a perfect bullet.

Can some one offer some in site as to why my deluxe seating die is crushing the shoulder and my mates competition seating die is pressing a normal bullet when set up exactly the same way in the press?

Sizing dies need to be set so it touches the shell holder, seating dies don't. Your die is too far down and the crimping ring is crushing your brass. Unscrew your die higher and screw down uour seating stem

Yes your seating die is adjusted incorrectly.
- back off the seating die several turns,
- place an empty case in the shellholder,
- pull the press handle all the way down so the empty case goes into the die,
- with the handle down, turn the die down until you feel it touch the empty case,
- back the die out a half turn, and lock the locking ring.

Put your ram all the way to the top. Put a nickel on top of the shellholder.
Now screw your seating die down till it touches the nickel firmly
Secure the lock ring, set your seating stem, and you are good to go.
Dave.
