I have had some modest success over the last few years shooting yotes with, what I would say is maybe a 33% success rate give or take.... and that is by day, not by stand....

I was always interested in incorporating my Carver hand calls with my Foxpro, instead of choosing either or, but really wasn't quite sure how to do so effectively.....

In one of Frank's recent write ups, he mentioned keeping the Foxpro at a modest volume and blasting out occasionally with a hand call.... When I read it, this made perfect sense to me, an "I'm in terrible pain" sound that is backed up when you pause with a lower more "whimpery" sound.....

Went to my first stand today, which is actually not a field, but a hardwoods bush and took my usual place with my back up a deadfall and set out my decoy and foxpro..... waited about 20 minutes for the woods to settle down and and started up the caller on low.... after 5 minutes with the caller on low, I began crying out with the hand call.... maybe two minutes of crying out with a 3 minute pause in between..... I did this 3 times and shortly after stopping hand calling the third time (about 15 minutes into the set), a nice male came out of the cedar swamp to my right...... he was focused on the decoy (foxpro was hidden by snow near it). He trotted towards it then stopped (I need a better decoy, a brown rabbit this time of year just doesn't look right). Fortunately, the three seconds it took him to stare and make up his mind was all I needed, as the .223 cracked and sent one where it needed to...... after three turns he bolted back towards the swamp but only made it halfway.....

Thanks for your posts Fratri, and if you or Adrian have any ideas on how I can incorporate my howler into the equation, I am all ears!

Nice job on your coyote.

I was always thinking of playing with both ecaller and hand calls at the same time but never done it yet. That and when a buddy comes out with me that we both howl kind of at the same time.

Thanks Titch.... I have brought a few newbs out for yote, but only connected once with a partner in tow..... we actually each got one on the same set.....

To me, coyote is a solo prospect, with a partner, it is twice as much smell, twice as much movement etc..... but I bet would work with one shooter and one well hidden caller....

Nice looking coyote..... Keeping that e-caller always on (really low) not only does it keep the coyote's attention off the shooter it will also mask any slight noise one makes when getting ready for the shot. Glad it worked out so well for you....

As for the howling.... I like to start off my set with a howl..... usually two, wait a minute or two and then begin my set with dying rabbit screams....
I use the "big dog howler" from Carver Calls to get that howl sound out there... It sounds pretty good and easy to use...

That coyote looks like it's in great shape, a real beauty.
Congrats on the success.

Thanks again Frank.... And FYI, I have Kerry's "big dog howler" as well.....

Thanks for the congrats guys..... heading back out to a different spot tomorrow....

WTG, nice looking pooch.
About the brown rabbit.... I use a feather, a racoon tail or the woodpecker looking decoy from Foxpro. I think it's movement over reality.

Mine is a cheap quiver critter..... have thought about buying the white "rabbit sock" and modifying it so it looks like there is blood on it..... so it looks injured....

Brad, look in the pet section of different stores when you're in them. I have found some neat lightweight synthetic skins and such.

I even get to use them if the lab doesn't claim them first.

When I first started I used one of those weasel looking things from the pet store..... that have the motorized ball... I painted the ball brown and used an Xmas tree ornament hanger to hang it off a nearby branch, worked fairly well....

Love the rabbit droppings around the carcass...

Lol... ya, they smelled better than the coyote did.....

Nice looking coyote and interesting strategy. Going to have to try that one tomorrow when we head out for first wolf hunt of the new year. Congratulations!

Good luck Chas.... new .243 should be here next week, will be heading to camp to try my luck next weekend.... love wolf hunting

What is your definition of the e-caller continuously on low volume? My Crossfire has a range of 0-40 for volume with 40 being LOUD! I can set it up 150 yards away in the open fields out here with nothing to echo off of and on a slight wind in my face it sounds like it is beside me just on mouse squeaks!! I had it set one morning on a bale at 144 yards from me when I spotted a coyote in the pasture next to me at 230 yards on my range finder. The call was due north of my position and the coyote west by northwest of my stand. I couldn't take a shot as he was in with a couple horses. The distance from e-caller to coyote would have been about 250 yards. I had the call turned off and cycled through the remote to mouse squeaks, set the volume to 10, about 1/4 and even I could hear it. The coyote never reacted and continued mousing in the horse pasture. A few minutes later he turned and walked into a dried out slough between the pasture and call. Fifteen minutes must have passed and suddenly there he was on the edge of the slough and stubble grain field looking towards the bale my call was on. He stared a few seconds then started to walk over towards the call. I waited until I had a perfect broadside to drop the hammer and smoked him twenty yards ftom the call at 144 yards. Even though it played out well it did not seem he was really interested in the call or sounds I had been making. I had seen him four times that morning over a 2.5 hour period before I finally got a shot. It was a real cat and mouse game. I have since acquired a decoy but only deployed it once so far. It sure sucks in Magpies and Owls though! Lol

I only have a spitfire, so it only has volume adjustment from 1 to 5.... it's plenty loud for around here but would want something bigger in the prairies..... I wasn't using mouse squeaks, was using the rabbit distress sound on a setting of one.... I could barely here it from 50 yards.....
