I have a Model 71 that spent it's life doing work, so it's not super pristine. The most offensive part is that, along the way, the original butt plate was replaced with a poorly fitting recoil pad with white spacers. I don't think that it was cut, which is good news. The pad does make it more pleasant to shoot, but since we're not allowed to hunt in the dark, I need to remedy the situation.

I think that the only configuration that was offered was a steel buttplate but I can't find particularly good photos of the plate itself. I suppose I could go with another recoil pad and do a better job of fitting it to the stock.

So if you have a Model 71, post up your buttstock and give me some ideas of what direction I should be going.

And if you happen to have a line on the piece that I need, please feel free to let me know!

Unscrew it, take the thick white piece out, see if the remaining white line pad fits proper. It would look fine without the heavy white spacer.

Were it mine, I’d just have a brown 1” decelerator fitted to it. Maybe an oil finish while we’re at it

Google Browning 71 buttplate. It will take you to Midwest Gun Works who has the buttplate for $42.26. They DO NOT Ship to Canada, so you would need to arrange delivery to a U.S. address.The butt plate on my Browning 71 looks just like butt plate on my Winchester71.If you still need a pic send me your email and I'll snap some pics for you.That buttstock looks refinished. I have an as new Winchester71 and the stock is not glossy like your photo.
THere are some excellent photos of the butt plate if you google browning 72 butt plate, images. Google Winchester 71 Butt plate images and there are some excellent pics.Please note the little "toe" on top of buttplate, the stock inletting may have been removed when your recoil pad was installed.
I would add a thin red recoil pad to replace what you have if the original stock has not been shortened too much.

Buy 348Winchester components when you see them and enjoy your 71,a very special rifle:cheers:

Take all that junk off and put a thin black rifle pad on it, like the Pachmyr RP200.

I just fought the screws out and ditched whatever unholy plastic that spacer was made of. The Pachmayr pad actually fits pretty nicely, so I guess it will do for now. Interestingly, you can see where old screw holes were filled before the pad was put on. Big Bear hit the nail on the head...the inletting for the "Widows Peak" on the stock buttplate so now I'm wondering how much wood was taken off. Doesn't feel terribly short, but I didn't measure it while I had it out.
 
I would be inclined to order the proper steel plate for it and get rid of the rest of that junk. The rifle deserves it! As long as it is not cut too short that is, then SOL I guess.

Love the 71’s! Glad I have lots of 348 loading components!

It's a Lyman 56. I'll snap a few pics tonight when I get home.

I was lucky that I got quite a few boxes of ammo with the rifle (and he formed a lot of 219 Donaldson Wasp brass for me while he was using my rifle so I did really well) but bullets will be a challenge to source. I have so many components for various rifles that it's not even funny so I guess adding another bullet diameter to the herd probably isn't a big deal.
 
That recoil pad would look kinda cool without the thick white line. Since it’s already been altered you might as well enjoy softer recoil. My original rifle and my Browning carbine measure 13 1/4 LOP. As for components, I emailed Hornady a while back and they responded, implying they might start making component bullets again. With all us Model 71 guys so hard up for brass and bullets you would think someone would step up.
 
Winchester 71 discussion, oh happy day!

My "Rancher 71" Cost me $600 because of wear on blue, buttstock had been broken and repaired with yellow fibre glass, then adorned with a large Airborne sticker. Replaced butt stock, added Redfield receiver sight and King reflector front sight. My favourite reload with Hornady 200gr bullet and h4831sc gives me consistent 1.5" groups at 100yds, frequently with ,1/2" 2 shot snake eyes.

My other shooter 71 is a Browning 71 carbine, Standard grade. Got it cheap because of a scratch on the receiver. Put a Turnbull mount with Fast Fire II red dot sight.

My as new Deluxe Win71 and and Win 71 with Bolt peep are deep in the safe and I'm lazy/busy today.
Winchester 71, best lever gun. Period.

I have been wanting to try one of those Turnbull red dot mounts for a while but they will not ship to Canada apparently. Seems like you are happy with yours. It looks ok as well. I may have to resume my efforts to obtain one. I was going to add a skinner bolt mounted peep to my Browning Carbine but haven’t drilled and tapped for it yet.
 
Agreed, I'd take the existing recoil pad off and replace with something more period correct. I had a M71 deluxe with peep sight years ago, I kick myself for selling it, of all the Winchester lever guns, I think they were the most handsome, and the .348 round is a great cartridge.

The Browning 71s are drilled and tapped for side mounted receiver sight. Williams makes a call nice modern receiver sight with hand adjustable Target knobs or at least they did. I had a Browning 71 carbine with that light. Works nicely. I sld that rig to fund a NIB High Grade Browning 71 carbine. Much better sight than the Skinner IMO. Turnbull. like many others U.S. companies, stopped exporting gun parts like this when the "AntiTerror"" gun laws came into effect.They felt the possible hassle was not worth the returns on our small Canadian market.I sure wouldn't drill and tap your carbine. Little to gain and $value will be lost. But, your rifle, do as you please of course.

Vintage receiver sights are really nice but costly. I bought some on eBay years ago but again I think you might not be able to get them easily from U.S. any more.

I was happy enough with me Pedersoli 86/71 in 45-70. I added their bolt mount peep on 'er which worked sweet for me then. No worries on the
buttstock and pad fer me. Never went for a .348 meself, but Pedersoli makes them.
