Side by side for ends -- Splinter or Beavertail?

While I think the splinter forend is the best looking especially with a traditional English buttstock, I don't really like it for actual usage. For me, I don't care for my fingertips and thumb contacting the barrels so much as one does with the splinter. Shooting more than the occasional round in actual hunting situations leads to discomfort from the heat and those slip-on heat guards look like crap to me.
On the other hand, the full beavertail is too much the opposite so for me a modified smaller beavertail forend is my best compromise for looks, grip and heat protection.

I prefer Splinter for ends, I have never had a problem holding them, but some shooters tend to cant the gun when they grip a splinter, so they go for the semi or full beaver tail grip, like planemaker likes.

As far as looks go,

I think I like the splinter better as well....

Splinter. Beavertails are too ugly. Besides, I don't like it when they catch you off guard and make that loud noise slapping the water.

Splinter and prefer thinner forends on an o/u as well. The ultra wide BT forends don't give me the same sense of control over the barrels as the splinters and it is the foreward hand the does the steering.

The middle option, a semi-beavertail, would be my choice for a 28 gauge or .410 when the splinter forend becomes almost too small.

A splinter fore end on a straight grip SxS is not meant to be held on to. While the heel of your hand may rest upon its front end, your thumb and fingers should be holding the barrels. This keeps the alignment of the hands as close as possibe to the eyes and makes for a natural snap shot (among other benefits).

With small gauge barrels such as 28 ga. or .410 an extended length semi beavertail is sometimes preferable. A full beavertail should be reserved for use with a pistol grip. This is not so much a matter of personal taste as it is a function of the design of the gun and it's intended use.

I shoot alot of 28 and 410, so prefer the semi beaver forends as they are more comfortable and I like the look! I like a larger splinter on my 12's for sure, cheers dale in T-Bay!

Sharptail has it right!!!!!! One wears leather gloves to shoot a splinter. A beaver tail forend changes the balance of the gun and makes for a slower swinging gun. The MOI will proove this! Sorry, there is a way to measure the feel of a gun. It is using a machine that spins an object to measure it's Moment of Inertia. It is a scientific way of measuring things in mouvement. I saw the machine a few years ago at the Orvis Cup. It was right every time!

Regards,
Henry;)

I like to call it PGS (Putting the gun to my Shoulder) and shooting it. I have never heard of an MOI machine. Sounds like a Centrifuge for Shotguns. Could you explain this machine a little better? Maybe some pic's? As far as gloves go my SxS's have double triggers and gloves don't work for me. Even on the coldest day's.
I prefer Splinter fore ends.

There may be a scientific way of measuring things in movement but this is not a measure of the feel of a gun.

I believe one of the regular posters on doublegunshop is the owner of the MOI machine. If you find the fairly recent thread talking about 4 bores, there are a number of postings about it. That's if my memory holds. It a fairly long thread but should be easy to find the posts. If you can't find it let me know and I will dig it up. Too late tonight to do it.

BTW, I recently found some golf gloves designed for cold weather play that I have found are great for shooting with, even with my double triggers. Cabretta leather on the palms and fingers, while the back is a thin micro-fibre fabric. They were sold in pairs (right and left) and even have a normal cuff rather than the velcro closure across the back of the hand.

IIRC it was Gough Thomas that first applied Moment of Inertia to shotguns. Don Amos is the poster on doubleguns that developed the MOI machine.

I have smallish hands and get the hell beat out of my mid finger by the trigger guard on dt guns. This doesn't bother me much in the field but when shooting SxS events at clays games it is very bothersome. I've tried everything over the years and the best solution for gloves is Gripswell SxS gloves. They have a padded middle finger & a palm swell on one hand and a insulated palm on the leading hand. The. make them for left and right handed shooters.
Thanks for all the posts!
Cheers, John

He goes by the name of Rocketman over there and the recent thread is from Oct 3 called "new world record for high swing effort"
