Has anybody tried to convert an upper to a side reciprocating charging handle ,either left or right hand side on an AR or modern sporter type rifle
with no forward assist ?

contemplating trying this ,in research mode right now and was not contemplating the conversion for competition purposed but more for hunting with gloves on or in my case sausage fingers trying to reach under scope to pull charging handle

watched some videos on it so far and it does allow to use wider range of optics that site further back and I am aware of the wide charging grips

Both our Modern Hunter and Modern Varmint come standard with a NON reciprocating side charge handle on the left side of the upper specifically to solve the scope mounting problem rear charge uppers have.
To retrofit a rear charge, may be possible (anything is if you throw enough $$ at it) but it would be a major alteration even on the left side. Not sure it could be done on the right.

Not sure if this abomination would work

Ok ,watched a few more YouTube videos
tackled it today L/H side reciprocating charging handle on SAI set .A lot more material in it than the ar parts rifle ,
works good ,took about 3 hours and only 1 little oops ,minor but still an oops
run 100 rounds of nork through it this afternoon

it's not for everyone ,but it is for my use .
Not really that difficult ,as the hardest part is cutting into the new upper .
The BC is hardened and had to use carbides to get through the top layer and then easy enough to finish drilling and tapping for the charging handle .

Thank you
It did turn out as expected ,was still concerned while cutting .The rifle runs as it should .Also done the other upper for x39 and just waiting on the last bits to arrive and take them out for sighting
