Sierra 168gr.

Sierra 168gr HPBT Matchking for shooting paper only, not for hunting

..........165gr Gameking and 165gr HPBT are O.K for hunting.

How does the .308 perform generally for moose?

The .308 is fine for moose hunting

168 gr Nosler

I have used both the 168 gr Nosler Hunting BT and the Combined Technology, win/nosler black bullet, white tip, for big western deer and our BC moose. Its replaced the 165's I used to use in my .308 Sako Carbine, and an LTR that I like to use for hunting. Both bullets have worked great with no complaints in performance. And, I can use em for "Mexican match" and the data stays the same in my sniper rifle,,
I would not reccomend using any .30 cal HPBT for hunting. thats not what they are meant for, and why use them when there are accurate hunting bullets in that weight, if you must shoot 168's. Remember shot placement is everything, more critical than a few grains of bullet..
Even Barnes has a 168gr triple shock I think..

Sierrra 168gr. MK's are not designed as a hunting bullet, the hollowpoint doesn't aid in expansion, its a left over part of the bullet making process where the punch pushes the new bullets out of the dies at the factory. .308is more than enough caliber, but use the proper ammo for best results. The Winchester CT 168gr. load would be a good hunting load compared to any type of match bullet.

I'd never do it, but I'm curious, what can go wrong with the matchking for hunting? Is it just that it wouldn't expand reliably, or is there more to it?

lack of expansion. They are hollowpoints designed for accuracy. Basically they will preform like a full metal jacket.

I'd recommend the Nosler silvertip black bullet with the white plastic tip thinger for hunting. I've been hemming and hawing about switching up my M852 with Mexican match using those Noslers so I can use them hunting and target practising ... even better, they are cheaper then the Sierra MatchKings!

Do not use MatchKings for hunting.

Use the 165gr GameKing instead. They make that bullet in a hollow point or soft point.

A friend's experience would suggest that the hollow point is actually somewhat stiffer than the SP... anecdotally as observed on game.

I would not try a moose but I I have dumped a deer with my 308 and 175 gr SMKs out of a stand. I have also seen hand fulls dumped with the A-Max bullet as I dumped one 2 years ago with a 162 7mm to try it. They were both very controled shots out of percision rigs and good rests. I seen not bad performance with the A-Max with passed through with good penetration, and shreading the lungs..the 2 i shot with match bullets were down instant. It had a nice clean hole about loony sized great wound channel. As for the SMK about the same as I shot it in the neck and busted the spine but it passed though. I guess its not fair to say it was great however it worked liek i figured it would.

Lets face it no matter the effect of a bullet or shape as long as you get it into the lungs someplace with any kind of damage, (does not require a pass through shot but its better if it does), your animal is walking dead on its feet I do not thing one hunter can argue this, besides the ones that swear they shot deer, moose etc.. in the lungs and they got away. Well the fact isin that case they did not hit lungs!!!!

I would not suggest doing this as NO its not a hunting bullet,, but a deer is only a deer 200 lbs 12-16 inches thick Total with .3 inch shoulder bones and .25 inch thin ribs! There hide hardly starts the expansion of the bullet, as we all cut through many while hiding them out.

There are much better bullets but lets face it a deer is what it is, hardly even in the big game market.

However the SGK (Game kings) shoot almost as well as the SMKs and if accuracy is your issue switch to Bergers VLD Hunting/Target bullets which I am going to try this year on deer!

But for big game moose and bear, I load the TSX or accubonds, along with the old partitions still, and that is my main bullet I have shot the past 3 years. Before that Hdy Interbonds were the pills along with the old Nosler Parts.

I generaly stick to a soft bullet for deer interlocks or core locks.

Some HPBTs are designed for expansion and others are the result of a manufacturing process. The Match King bullets are the latter and do not reliably expand on game.

I used them all last season for deer and 7 shots with 7 dead deer. I have to add all were head shots except one. The non-head shot was also a bang flop.
