Sierra HPBTMK

Hey all,
What's the best place to order 175 or 168 Sierra MK's from?

-Rohann

A store................................ :slap: :p

Try to find them local to yourself as the shipping weight & costs will probably increase the price.

Wholesale Sports had some decent prices, but again the shipping weight and costs will be negate the savings.

I get mine locally from "Curese" (Custom Reloading) here on CGN.

Looked around here, and no one had them. P&D was out also, but I'm going to try vBull later on and see if they have anything in stock. They're in Vancouver, right?

-Rohann

Thanks!
They're all out as well, but have some on order.
No place I've phoned yet has any in. Are they very popular, or not really at all?

-Rohann

Very popular, but businesses don't seem to bring enough of them in. I have contemplated buying a crapload from the states and getting an import permit. The Americans can buy them for $110 per 500 compared to our $170 if you can find them.

So, price being about the same why 168's and 175's. 168's were designed in the 60's for 300m ISU shooting and are crap at long range. Why load both bullets?
I have had very good luck with 155 Noslers. I think they have and edge over 155 SMK in my rifles. The 155 Lapua bullets work very well and use about 2 MOA less elevation at long range then both Nosler's and SMK's.
I can use the same elevations for SMK's and Noslers out to 1000 yards.

Thanks guys!

maynard: Just thought I'd try both out; didn't know 168's were so bad at longer ranges. I'll just try out the 175's then, and maybe some 154 Scenar's(?) (Blackcloud recommended them, apparently they work really well).

Where would I be able to get ahold of some Lapua 154's?

-Rohann

Well it's just from Calgary, so it's not all that far. Heck I might talk to HWMNBN, as I'd much rather support him than Wholesale sports...
I'm gonna try out the SMK's and Lapua's first, as I've found they've gotten the best reviews/repuatation, then I might mess around with some others. How do the Berger's work for you? What do you shoot them out of?

168's might make it to the target at long range, but some have been known to fall out of the sky between 800-1000. The ones that do make the trip may go in sideways.

For Lapua see this thread

Joe of ### International carries Berger Bullets. They also have a fine selection not to be overlooked. Email Joe for advice on these.

Lapua do well but need the speed. I have not found anyone who has 175SMK's right now outside of Wholesale. I'd rather support local or the small guy so I'll wait.

I do lots with the Lapuas and have had nothing but success after some good load development.

maynard: Thanks, I'll ask him about the bullets. You're right though, I've heard of 168's performing like crap at long ranges (apparently they were made specifically for LE purposes).

Blackcloud: I'm not sure if Lapua is the best thing to get into as of yet, as I'm just taking these to a guy I know who's gonna show me a couple things about reloading. He's got some powder, and I've got Federal brass so I figure I'll just mess around a bit before getting my own reloading gear and better components. I don't have any reloading gear whatsoever, let alone a chronograph. Do you think I should just go with the Sierra's for now, or hold off for Lapua? Also, did you talk to HWMNBN about 175 SMK's?

-Rohann

The 168gr SMKs are good up to 600 meters.Past that they go for ####.I use the 168s for practice ammo.

The 175gr SMKs are good to 900 meters.Have had good result with them.

Do not over look the Hornady 178gr AMAX bullets. I currently use these bullets and have had awesome results.

My current Varget load has the 178gr AMAX going at 2750 fps going out of a Stainless McPhee match barrel with a 1 in 11.3" twist. The Bullets I use all get Moly-coated.

I wish I could get the 154gr Scenars to work for me and my LTR....

I am going to try the 168Berger VLD to see how it works with its high BC

the 175SMK is the load I will stay with for now its seem to work real good!!

but if I can get the VLD to shoot anywhere near the goups size of the 175SMK I might switch to that to save on my long range dope

Jamie

Jamie: Yeah Blackcloud said the 154's are fairly picky. I'd like to try 'em out, but I think the 175's might be the best bet as of now.
I just looked at the Bergers and they have a really good BC. I'm about to order, as I'm hopefully going to be reloading sometime next week or the week thereafter. Should I go with Sierras for now or experiment with Berger?

Skullboy: Do you get them specially moly-coated? Why is that? Also, what BC do the 178 Amax bullets have?

Thanks,
-Rohann

the SMK's will be easyer to get....try them first

I will help you out with reloading tips!

I would stay with the 175s for now if I was you

the VLD's might not work well loaded to mag length so you might end up with a Single shot rifle

Jamie

Awesome! I'd appreciate it.
Ok I'll just order the 175's for now, at least I know they work well. I'll let you know when they actually get here.

Skullboy: I checked Hornady's site, and Sierra's 175's have a .001 higher BC than the Hornady's. I'll try out the SMK's for now and see how that works out first.

Thanks all!
