sig 540 vs 550

I fail to see enough of a difference between the two that would justify a new production line.

550 has:
better plastic?
Rubber dust cover
Better barrel?
Not available in 7.62 :(
tailored for swiss ammo specifically?


Maybe someone who is more educated can chime in on the actual differences.....
 
They are totally different guns. I have the 542 7.62. The blue rifle was made as a "cross" between the 542 and the 550, so that it would be non-restricted where 550 were restricted.

I read somewhere that the 540 was real expensive to produce. Maybe the 550 is more streamlined for production than the 540.
 
Well then where the eff do I get a 540?! Someone get FAMAE to bring them in, after all they import MINI SAF's!
 
someone did try but those FAMAE were not even supposed to be diverted to civilian sales from B&T in the first place.

B+T distributes FAMAE in Canada? That's an odd Swiss-Chilean-Canadian triangle. What's the obstacle, FAMAE, Chile, the Zeta Reticulans? Imagine the SG 542 in civilian hands here... Folding stock, carbine length, gas piston, drum sights and 7.62 mm NATO, the rifle would be a hit! And B+T makes a rail for it.

Well I think the reason you don't see 54X around is because they don't make them anymore... I'm not too sure what their production was like even when they were making them. Certainly not like the 550 out now, that's for sure.
 
Chile still makes them but they do not condone the sale of weapons of war to civlians. People with Famae SMG's are screwed when they break down.
