Hello,

I have a SIG P229 with a broken takedown lever. Apparently this is recent problem (as found on sigforum)with many of their models. I am unable to field strip and clean my firearm and really need to get this fixed ASAP as I want to finish my BB certification at a local match. My question is how do you go about sending it to the US for repairs or can it be fixed in Canada under warranty? I have owned this firearm since March and have ~ 1200-1500 rounds through it.

cheers :(

First is the gun unloaded? If still loaded or not sure, call a local gunsmith for advice.

Can you get the slide to move? You might be able to use a punch to reconnect the pieces to disassemble it. Try pressing the slide back into battery slightly to see if you can get the lever to move. If it does move slightly see if both ends move the same. You will need to move the lever into the UPPER vertical position to remove the takedown lever from the locking block.

The gun is unloaded and the slide does move. The lever basically spins freely. I had tried to move the central bar with a screw driver on the side opposite to the lever, but it quickly marked the finish.

SIG is sending me the new part and I will have a local gunsmith install it. ETA about 10 days. My other option was having the entire firearm sent to RNichols who would send it down to SIG; ETA 3-6 months.

No, they just asked for my serial number. Overall they were good to deal with.

This experience really opened my eyes to the potential pitfalls of dealing with cross-border companies that do not have Canadian rep's. I wanted to qualify for my Black Badge this Sunday and fortunately I'm able to borrow a Glock 17 and kit. I don't expect to place in the top 5 just yet and I'm familiar with the Glock, so no real harm.

... And the saga continues. I went to check my mailbox and it was bare. I'm going to call SIG again tomorrow and see what went wrong. I'm not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling buying a high-end firearm from a well known manufacturer. I could have bought a Norinco or three and still been ahead of the game "reliability" wise. I had to pay to rent a Glock for my first IPSC match and it looks like I won't have my pistol ready for another event Nov 2nd.

Am I the only one getting a sour taste for SIG?

The SIG is back in operation! :dancingbanana:

It cost me $1.09 for a bolt cap from Home Depot and a few minutes with a file to make the tool required to remove the old broken takedown lever.

Once I got it taken apart, I started noticing a lot of metal shavings (which I removed). Is this normal for a new firearm? While I had her apart, I also installed a short trigger. This pistol is slick now :)

Quite a few metal bits around this area... Maybe it's a placebo, but the action cycles a lot smoother now.
