I'm not really one to go plastering all kinds of crap onto a rifle, and certainly not for cosmetic appeal only...but this little gizmo looks like it will be worth its weight in gold for winter hunting. I love the way it wraps right down to the front lip of the magazine well; use a Magpul or other plastic magazine and your hands will stay much more comfortable in cold weather.

Can't even seem to find it in stock in the U.S., and would much rather locate it here in Canuckistan. Anybody seen one in stock?

looks like sig released a bunch of goodies for the cross. enlarged bolt knob, enlarged safety, and new pistol grip

Well, they released a bunch of pictures...hopefully the hardware will follow shortly. Is Sig known for announcing stuff that takes forever to actually be produced?

The enlarged bolt know caught my eye as well, but l would be interested in a knob that was a bit longer but not necessarily wider; this new one seems like the exact opposite.

I received an answer to my email inquiry this morning; it was sent at about 8:30am (local time, Mississauga) which is essentially an instant response to my Saturday-morning question. To quote:

"Unfortunately, that accessory has not been imported into the country so sourcing it might be a little tough at the moment.

We are expecting more Cross rifle accessories to come in by summertime of this year."

To follow up on this in case anyone is looking for the same thing...I contacted Charlton again a few days back and was told that none of these gizmos have yet made it into the country. No comment on when/if expected.

I have installed a few M-lok rubber handguard cover strips on my Cross, and it was pretty much a waste of time. They may very well increase the grippiness of the rifle, but I'm not jumping out of planes with it clutched in my hand and find it quite easy to hang onto without the additions. I can already tell...in July!...that they won't do anything for me in terms of making the grip warmer to the touch, simply because they mount so far forward of the balance point that I really don't touch them while gripping it one-handed for carry. They might keep my left hand more comfortable while actually in the shooting position...maybe...but there is still considerable exposed metal between them, so maybe not.

I still want the Sig item. :)

Why not just get something like a SHTF wrap or other handguard wraps for carbines.
I know they're marketed to manage gas block heat but it works for cold weather too.

Hah! I didn't know they were marketed at all! :)

I have tried a DIY cloth padded wrap around the handguard. Works half-assed okay, PITA to attach and keep attached; but also gets wet and then you have a damp rag wrapped for extended periods around your rifle. My issue is cold-weather shooting, with snow and condensation as two concerns. It's also a little too tacticool for this old guy; seems less about functionality and more about looking like you are sneaking through a bombed-out alley in Beirut. Just not my cup of tea. I don't even wear a plate-carrier or a shemagh while hunting or range shooting. :)

My best solution so far is a thin rubber sheet cut to size and wrapped around the handguard. Works okay, and should insulate my hand well enough in the cold, but still looks very Mickey-Mouse/DIY...because it is. The enlarged, larger section of handguard where it attaches to the receiver complicates things for a neat installation.

For anyone who might be interested, the Sig plastic handguard cover being discussed here has apparently landed in Canada. I just ordered one from RDSC...80 bucks, and their last one, apparently...but likely other dealers will have it as well. After calling Charlton multiple times this year looking for it, I got a heads-up right here on CGN, in another thread I started on hunting with the Cross.

Today I received the Sig Cross handguard cover, close to one full year after I began looking for it. This expensive little piece of molded plastic installs easily onto the rifle's handguard using the two M-lok screws and nuts provided. It increases the comfort of handling considerably, by filling in the sharp angle in front of the magazine well. It decreases but does not completely eliminate the contact between cold metal and the carry hand. Between this and being careful to choose only plastic magazines, I think the problem of cold metal is solved but won't actually know until our temperatures drop again; we're currently almost up to zeroC so can't really test that out at the moment.

It comes with a little plastic molded piece that fits between it and the handguard if desired, filling in the little grooves where an Arca rail would fit if you have one. I don't have one, but fiddled the cover into place without the filler piece and won't bother to remove it just to install the extra little gizmo; it's strictly cosmetic and barely noticeable; not worth the trouble of fiddling with the M-lok again. :)
