Hi classic masters, I need help to setup a Sig Max Michel 1911 in 40 SW to use in IPSC from my friend.
I do not have much experience in 1911. (I am a CZ guy, only have one SAM and one SPS)
I have some question as below and hope someone can help me out.
1. what main/recoil spring combination is good for 40 Major, and what main/recoil spring combination is good for 40 minor?
2. I know I need to replace the magwell to make it IPSC legal, witch one I should go to? ICE or Techwell?
3. I understand it come with a 80 series trigger. Can I do the trigger job like what I have done to my 70 series?

Thank you very much for your help!

I'm a .45 guy so I can't help much with springs other then to say switching to a dual recoil spring set-up in my colts was a huge improvement imho but for the magwell I would go with the Dawson Ipsc legal. I have two of the Dawson's as well as a more traditional ovular fusion on an old commander and the Dawson's are way faster, also I'm not sure if the sig has an extended mag release but I use the Wilson combat and really like it but some of my friends with "office hands" found it a little too aggressive.

Most popular springing for 40 Major is 12lb - run a shock buff - it does beat into the frame.
40 Minor - well, no more than 10lb with a 15lb mainspring. It really depends on the loads you develop. Note that tuning of the firing pin stop can help.

Dawson ICE magwells (the ones with inserts) are not legal - they are wider than the IPSC magwell limit; but Dawson Classic IPSC magwells are legal.
Between Techwell and Dawson; it's really personal preference.

The series 80 trigger can be gunsmithed to have a crisp light break, but it's more difficult than a series 70. The trigger pull is doing more than just moving the sear.
Decide if you're willing to remove the firing pin safety (which basically makes it a series 70) first.

Do you have shock buff in your shop? I am not able to find one...
Thanks

I found it under EGW. Thanks

Putting the order together just waiting for the gun to show up now.

The gun show up last night.
Good sight and great balance. Love it.
Trigger........
Well lets say I need some suggestion to deal with the series 80 trigger.
It is not too too bad, but weight more than 4 lb, and it feel "Compressing spring" and not smooth.
I am capable to tune 70 series gun and get 2 lb trigger reliably. But this is going to be my first time working on a 80 series.
My plan as follow.
Polish below parts
Disconnector
Trigger bow
Pins
Firing ping plunger
Firing ping plunger lever
Not going to touch sear engagement at this point.

Adjust disconnector spring and sear spring weight.

Do I miss anything?

Some update on the Max 1911 40 S&W.
Original gun is too big to fit into IPSC box.
Magwell need to be replace to be classic legal.
10 round mag with the gun need to file down 4 mm - 5 mm to fit the box.
9 round mag is okay.

If you want to shoot minor, get a 9 mm......
