SIG Mosquito Exploded While Shooting!!!

At the range today my Sig Sauer Mosquito exploded while my son was shooting! By exploded I mean the slide snapped in half and blew apart after firing a round. Scared the heck out of me I’ll be honest. After I ensured my Son was ok I started picking up the pieces to determine what went wrong. Slide snapped in half. Anyone heard of this before? Is this covered by SIG?! I am not the original owner I purchased it if the EE. Thanks for any and all assistance someone may be able to provide.

Glad nobody was hurt. Yes, it was reason why I never bought one. Was too many reports of slide splitting. Should be covered by Sig. Problem with these pot metal slides.

Yep well know. Somewhere around 12000to 15000 rounds they decide to crack. Normally you just see a crack. Just be glad it wasn’t a more powerful pistol which decided to let go. I had one and sold it to fellow and he knew about the possibility of the slide cracking. Had just over 1000 rounds through it. For $300 if he gets 10000 rounds through it he figures he will get his money’s worth. No harm to your son but is definitely scary.

I wish I would have done better research on these Mosquitos before I bought it. I assumed, wrongly so, that a SIG would be a SIG. lesson learned stick with a Rugger for 22 plinking!

Is buying a replacement slide even an option?

Seems like finding a good slide is harder than I first thought!

If you can find a slide, fix it, verify it and sell it. Get a good used High Standard for about a hundred more than the SIG, and your family will be shooting it 4 generations from now (if we still can).

This was a very common issue for the mosquito, and when I say very its not an exaggeration, had this happen to me about 7 years ago, replacement slides basically don't exist, was able to send it away for warranty, they had the gun for 3 years, no parts ever came for it, eventually they offered me a gsg 1911. Haven't heard of these issues on the newer models not called the mosquito

That Walther p22 has on occassion the 22 LR slide blows apart much like this SIG Mosquito.
Is because consumers do not recognize, even acknowledge that Umarex is being cheap and using slides made for a mere gas pellet launching pistol & uses this POS material in 22 rimfire.
Buy junk then you should expect junk. Meanwhile someone has all your money.

they have had these problems with them for years, they are not even made my sig

Don’t even try to get it fix.
Buy a proven design that will last you for years.
Ruger Mark IV - steel frame and barrel - will outlive you and you son.
S&W 41 is in the same category. Beretta model 87 or 89.
Browning Buck Mark line of .22.
There is way better out there that pot metal gun such as Gsg and Umarex sold under know name such as Walter and Sig.

After owning a few "pot metal" 22lr's semi's and reading about their potential for slide failures I went back to the Ruger MK's proven design......ymmv

Why would you even consider a replacement slide after that experience.

I got a Mosquito on a trade probably 10 years ago. I always defended them, because mine ran reliably, was accurate, and fun. It wasn't particularly fussy about ammo. You just had to run it oily. I probably put somewhere between a thousand and fifteen hundred rounds down it, and my kids all learned to shoot on it.

I hadn't shot it for 6 or 8 years, I got a S&W M41, and a Colt Challenger. Then 3 Colt Match Target Woodsmen and they are all just superior in every way. Anyway, the Mosquito surfaced the other day while I was going through the safe, and I figured it needed a range day.

So today, I put a mag of .38 gr target loads through it, but had to cycle every round manually. Too light. My friend had some Stingers, so I put a mag of those through, and it didn't like those either. So then I put a half magazine of Mini Mags through it. On the 5th round the front of the slide sheared off clean, and flew 7 yards down range, and the rear of the slide and guide rod/spring landed in front of the booth. No damage to shooter (me) so all good.

I can no longer speak nice things about the Mosquito.

Note to self. Stick to S&W and Colt .22 autos.

Considering that guns like Ruger MK II target models show up regularly on the EE in the $300-400 range I don't know why anyone would even consider guns like the Mosquito or Beretta Neos. When is the last time you saw a Ruger MK I-IV blow up like that?

I probably wouldn't have ever had one, but somebody was trading for something I had, but the deal was a little lopsided so he sweetened the pot with the Mosquito. Not a huge financial impact for me, but sad that I now have to agree that all Mosquitos are crap. I used to like having the one good one.

Same issue with the Walther P22.
Because same crappy cheap alloy slide used in some kind of less lethal pepper gun sold in Europe.
They get these ridiculous ideas from companies such as Umarex. A Eurotrash company its roots in replica and airgun technology. Utterly worthless engineers to propagate promote such weak firearm materials in a real gun.

Going to go clean my Ruger Mk II now!
