Sig P220 9mm vs P226 9mm

Essentially double stacked mags (226) vs. single stack mags (220)

10 rounds (neutered) vs 9 rounds.

Not sure if the 226 had the heal mag release, but the 220 can be had with either the heal or button release.

I don't believe the 220 (in 9mm) ever came with the optional light rail on the frame, as do currently produced 226s.

Not sure if the 220 was ever released with double action only either.

220s are no longer made in 9mm....... at least for North American consumption. If you decide on a 220 in 9mm you'll have to settle for a used one.

The 9mm P220 with the american mag release were brand new surplus pistols that originally chambered 38 super. I've shot and owned both, but I prefer the single stack.

Edit to add:

P226 comes in a plastic Sig case
P220 comes in a paper box
P226 9mm mags are readily available and for a decent price
P220 9mm/38 super mags are rare and freaken expensive

Good luck finding parts for the 220's in 9mm...even simple things like springs are hard to find...

Actually most parts interchange with the 45. We stock most of the ones that don't (recoil springs, locking insert)

Yes, Redleg would likely be able to source your 9mm P220 parts.

Don't know if TSE/Redleg or many people can source a new manufacture 9mm slide conversion kit for the P220 though. Importing that(just the upper) from Germany will likely cost more than a brand new 9mm P226, as it costs about €700 alone in Germany.

Mind you...if it's really the P220 you want and the P226 is too fat for your hand....that'd be for you to decide...

P220 9mm mag options

I have read on the SIG Forum that .38 super mags will work in the 9mm without problems. Does anyone have good/bad experience?

Numrich has .38 super mags for under $30 in stock, 9mm mags for $34 but out of stock.

I have asked SIG customer service if the .38 super mags will work for the 9mm. The reply from the SIG srmourer is that the internals of the .38 super is different , but did not say if they will work as a 9mm mag.

Any thoughts?

I actually have 2 9mm mags that came with the pistol and bought 2 38 super mags (which work perfectly) for the pistol. I wouldn't worry too much about parts though, I haven't had any problems with mine, and it's been about 5 years and gone through maybe 8000 rounds. Although some maybe put more rounds through there gun than I do.

The mags are identical except the 9mm has a 3mm spacer in the back of the mag to accomodate the shorter 9mm round.

P220 9mm mag

Thanks guys for the advice on the .38 super mag.

I bought my P220 9mm recently from a good CGNer and am very happy with it. The P226 has a grip too big for my hand so the P220. I think you can't go wrong with either. The quality is obvious.

I shot a 1.5" centre-to-centre 5-shot group from 25m standing right hand barricade. I must be lucky that day...

One of these days I'm going to shorten one of the followers and get 10 rounds in the 220 9mm mag. The follower is very long and it should be no problem. That's all sig did when they went from the 7 round .45 220 mag to an 8 round one.......
