Hey there folks. I have a question for those who are knowledgeable about my pistol. I have an Sig P220 that had a catastrophic failure last year. It went in and was repaired under warranty (Thank goodness) and was returned to me. Basically, the only thing not replaced was the frame. New slide, new barrel and all new parts in between. Here’s the problem. It won’t dry fire with an empty magazine inserted. Neither double nor single action. The hammer will #### and release with the trigger but the hammer won’t hit the firing pin. In single action the trigger just clicks and the hammer won’t fall. Hit the mag release and drop the magazine and it functions fine. It also seems to work fine actually firing live ammunition. This isn’t the end of the world or anything it’s just bothering me because it used to. Any idea what the problem could be? Thanks

OP,

Does this P220 have the mag safety in the locking block?

Does this P220 have the SRT(short reset trigger/sear/firing pin safety lever) installed?

Remove the RH grip panel from the frame.
The hammer pivot pin should protrude to the RH side to allow the trigger bar to function properly.
IF,the hammer pivot pin is flush on the RH side, remove the LH grip panel & push the pivot pin flush on the LH side & protruding on the RH side.
Apply some grease on the trigger bar/hammer pivot pin before re-installing the grip panels.
LH grip panel installed first.
RH panel installed 2nd.

Ensure that the trigger bar return spring aft end is installed in the notch in the underside of the trigger bar & NOT in the hole in the trigger bar.(under the RH grip panel)

Dry firing any SIG Classic P series pistol will bend/break the firing pin stop pin....DO NOT DRY FIRE the PISTOL

fyi-
Do NOT insert a round in the chamber & then release the slide or extractor issues will ensue.
Any semi auto pistol is of controlled round feed...designed to feed from the magazine.

If I were having the issues you've described, I'd be breaking it down completely and rebuilding to either fix the problem or find it.

Unless there's something special about the P220, an empty magazine inserted should not interfere with the operation of fire control. It should bother you: The pistol isn't working right.

It wouldn't be the first time a pistol came back from warranty service improperly reassembled, etc..

Also, the way you're describing it, the pistol won't be able to fire the last round of the magazine - There will be a live round in the chamber, and an empty magazine in the gun, right? Please confirm.

Thanks fellas. I'm very reluctant to send it in again. It literally took 12 months to get it back the first time. I'm concerned about the last round as well. When I function tested it when it was returned to me I didn't notice any problems at all but it fires in single action better than double so that's probably why. I definitely need to strip it completely and find out where the issue is. I appreciate the tips and advice

Check out Sig Guy on Youtube. His videos troubleshooting, disassembly/assembly of various Sig pistols are good. The camera work and close ups are excellent and might help to see if your frame internals were assembled correctly.

Is this DA/SA with decocker? You mentioned double and single action in the first post. Problem is that the pic from this angle this is definitely a DAO or DAK hammer. If it’s dao there shouldn’t be a sear to hold the hammer back and if it has a decocker it has the wrong hammer.

Pretty sure it’s the wrong hammer and who knows what else

Pic in post #5 is not from the OP.
Pic was posted to illustrate hammer pin protrusion & trigger bar return spring position.
