My new P220 Tactical: This is the two tone, black slide and stainless steel frame with adjustable sights (three dot) and a 4.5" barrel. Mag well is bevelled and a tac rail on the underside of the frame. Front strap and trigger guard are checkered. Price: $1495.00.

First impresions - nice piece of engineering. Fit and finish were both excellent. DA trigger pull was rather heavy (probably 8-9lbs) but single action was really smooth and silky and better than my 1911 with a trigger job. Maybe 3.5lbs. I moved the mag release to the right side as my small hands have a problem reaching it on the left side but otherwise the fit is perfect for me.

Just got back from the range where I fired 200 rounds. This would be my second trip out. First time out I went through 200 rounds with several FTFeed and near the end of the session several FT fire. The feed problem was excess lube from the factory which caused the mag to drop down out of the frame a 1/4" due to recoil so as a result it wouldn't feed the next round. After slapping it back in place I got it to feed but I also got the same thing every third round. After I removed the excess lube and dried the area and the problem stopped. I also suspect the mag needed some breaking in. This was the standard 7 round mag. The 8 round mags worked perfectly regardless of the amout of lube.

The FT fire was gunk on the bolt which appears to hold the case a few thous. out from the bolt face and hence a very light hit or possibly gunk between the bolt face and the breach face not allowing 100% lock up. I'm not 100% sure but after a strip down and clean I was back for my second time and both the feed and fire problem was gone. The FT fire did re-occurr again but only near the end of the session (actually at round 195 out of 200). Same build up on the bolt face. Cleaned it up and eveything was fine again.

With regard to accuracy, I was pleasently surprise. The test target included with the gun from SIG was a 1.25" group at 25m. With my reloads (4.5g Bullseye, 200g cast SWC) I shot a 2" group from the bench at 20m. My group was spread left to right which is propably due to my poor eyes.:( I suspect this gun could do a 1" to 1 1/4" group if I could see well enough and keep it steady. As long as it can out shoot me I've got something to work towards.

All in all I am very please with the gun.:D In my view, accuracy is outstanding. The only draw back is the FT fire after it gets dirty. I will just have to make sure it gets a good cleaning every 150 rounds to avoid any light hits or missfires. I will be using it for IPDA and PPC.

On the more subjective side of things, this sure is a pretty gun and once I get my new wood grips on it, it will be truly ###y.;)

I dont get your 220, big ass sight rear sight and why does it have a non-threaded extended barrel ?

Lube makes the mag fall down a 1/4 inch?

Is that a factory gun or something someone put together?

This gun was made for the Canadian market, hence the 4.5" barrel. Thats why you won't see this on SIG's web site. The barrel doesn't come threaded but that extension did appeal to me and I am considering getting it done so I can stick a fake can on the muzzle.;) The sights are also stock.

Shot PPC last night with it for the first time. On a 600 match I did a respectible 546.:D

The stock P220 barrel is 4.4", so I'm not sure why there needs to be an extended barrel made for the Cdn market. BTW I think yours is quite a bit longer then 4.5".

It looks like a nice gun.... but are those reliability issues normal for a Sig handgun?

I have one that functions flawlessly, I would say this is an exception, not a rule.

Could your ft fire and ft feed be a handload problem? Have you put any amount of factory ammunition through it? at least to break it in?

I'm also confused about the barrel length:confused:

If my standard 226 barrel is 4.4", then that Tactical looks like a 5". I like the look of your barrel unthreaded (no sense making it look like an HK :p ) Nice gun.

Yeah I fired a few mags from a P220 in 9mm this weekend. THought it was only availably in .45? The owner said he had some custom work done it..anyways, was pretty surprised by the pleasant balance and smooth trigger...on the combat range rapid fire groups at about 2 feet it was easy to achieve fist size groupings.. Was really surprised with how the light the slide was.. nice gun.

I've seen guns like this one before. They were not built by Sig this way but rather put together by the Canadian distributor from an assortment of various SIG and non-SIG parts (the barrel and sights are likely not made by Sig). In theory, the longer barrel is there to improve accuracy.

This gun is different from the U.S. market Tactical, which has an aluminum frame and threaded barrel.

Your correct. I just measured my barrel and it's 4.70" (120mm) in length.

Don't know precisley why they made it that much longer but being able to thread that last .25" of barrel seemed rather attractive to me for adding future accessories;) .

Ya your right, I think this was put together by Rnichols and sold as some kind of tactical.

All the 'tactical' Sigs I`ve seen have a threaded barrel and night sights not big adjustable ones.

IMHO(as a fellow P220 owner) if this was put together by R Nicholls, I would say they did a pxss poor job at "improving" an excellent and proven design. I can maybe understand the longer barrel but the rear sight's a joke. If they really want an adjustable sight you would think they would remill the slide and blend in the new sights better.
