Okay you SIG P226 lovers, especially those P226 shooters rocking the .22 LR conversion kit. Some of you really love the ability to have your slide lock to the rear after the last shot? Well here's an alternative to the resin mags that retail for $49 (give or take) from the board sponsors / dealers here. And that's IF they have them in stock...

GSDesigns came up with an insert of a 10 rd .22 LR magazine that fits in your 10 round factory magazine body. Here it is one one side:

And here's the other side:

So I installed them and took my time to see if I could mess up the install process. It was dead easy to install...

Just remove the base plate of your 10 round P226 9mm (not the plastic Mec-Gar versions)

Remove the spring and the factory 9mm follower:

And compare / align the insert body with the magazine (hollow now of course) body.

Shove in that magazine insert after aligning things up, yeah, the groove on the side of the magazine body is a giveaway. ha ha ha ha

Seat the insert all the way and as far as it allows you to... I just use a rubber mallet to gently seat the insert inside the magazine body.

Of course, ensure that the insert body is all the way inside the magazine body:

You can tell when it's flush.... and then think about sliding the factory base plate over the bottom of the magazine insert body, push in the detent and spring assembly to secure the base plate...

Now dry run and test the newly modified 10 round steel body by confirming that your pistol is unloaded and then seat that empty magazine body/ .22 LR insert assembly into the magazine well. Rack your slide and it will remain open.

Have a read about this piece of kit from GSDesigns: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...ted-SIG-P226-9mm-to-22LR-Magazine-Conversions

GSDesigns is a board dealer and I'm rocking these magazine inserts for schooling my clients as part of my business. Sure beats using them factory resin magazines and wishing they would allow the slides to lock to the rear just like their 9mm brothers! :D

Oh yeah, I forgot to explain what that little green button is for... It's a take down pin. Push on it and 'slide' it across and that pin will allow the magazine insert spring loose and out comes the follower. :)

Now once the snow melts, I will be testing them with clients of mine.

Stay tuned to this post!

Cheers

This is cool, but why not make a standalone unit? Most people would leave the magazine set up for .22s rather than take down the mag each time. Am I missing something?

Well for training and realism purposes, using the metal mag body replicates the weight and feel of a standard mag. It's also more durable than the material that I use, which is not particularly impact resistant.

More importantly, though, was the legality of it. When I contacted them, the RCMP gave me the impression I might need a business licence to make magazines, but inserts would be in the same realm as mag followers and replacement springs as they are not themselves magazines. Followed up with my CFO this morning and apparently I don't need a licence as long as they're not "hi-cap."

Thank you for the response.

Could you reveal the polymer type you are printing with? Concerns are the filament used will not stand up to prolong heat and wear if its ABS or PLA.

It's PLA. I've been trying to gauge wear over time, I've seen some, but not enough to be worried about. One of the inserts I've been testing from the start has probably 600+ rounds through it alone, most of the others have 2-300. I'll post photos later today. Heat hasn't been an issue so far either. The plastic melts somewhere around 150-200 degrees C. The magazine well tends to not get too hot with sustained fire, I've tried a "torture test" of about 400 rounds as fast as I could reload and empty 5 mags. There is a video of part of it on the other thread somewhere.

What kind of SIG mags are those? Are they checkmates? My mags are all steel but made by mecgar italy and they're not grooved like this on the sides; I believe they're factory 15 rounders blocked to 10. Will it fit?

They're exactly this model: h ttp://www.topgunsupply.com/sig_p226-9mm-15rd-magazine.html
