Hi guys,
I'm having a hard time deciding between these two options for the purpose of bullseye shooting or 3-gun. I can get either gun for a similar price (~$1200-1300, before tax). For the 1911 option, I had the Springfield Range Officer (stainless) in mind. Capacity isn't an issue, as I know I can get a 10-round 9mm 1911 mag online, at the very least.
I've had a chance to take both my DA/SA P226 with RRT (reduced reach trigger) and a friend's Colt MK IV (with a standard trigger) to the range for a comparison. I am missing a joint in my index finger, so reach is a concern for me. As for fit, my P226 in SA mode fits great - my finger would sit at a bit of an angle, but nearly perpendicular to the bore axis. For my trigger grip with the 1911, given that the gun had a standard-length trigger, my finger did rest at more of an angle and not quite as far on the trigger, but I still felt like I had a good-enough trigger grip. The short and crisp pull of the Colt ensured no struggle or lack of control on my part. I know I can always install a super-short trigger later on, and I know that would fit me more-so like the Sig. While doing some dry-firing the other night, I don't appear to pull left or right with one more than the other. With focus I believe I can pull the triggers straight in. I am aware of the concern of pushing the gun to the left because my trigger finger sits at a bit of an angle sometimes.
I originally posted a more lengthy version of this post on the Sig Talk forum for some opinions: http://sigtalk.com/sig-sauer-pistols/276225-sig-p226-elite-sao-vs-9mm-1911-range-officer.html
However, I have a feeling that there's some bias going on over there.
There's no doubt that either would be a great firearm to own.
Some things swaying me towards the SAO Sig are that I own a 22LR kit that would fit on it and I have the RRT currently on my DA/SA, which I could take out. As for target sights, I suppose that if I feel the need to, I could buy some for it.
On the other hand, I'm assuming that the 1911 could be more easily upgraded to be accurized, if I so choose. But with that, I guess it wouldn't like to get dirty/sandy, which would happen depending on the scenario. Maybe it also comes down to which kind of competition I want to do with this? I don't know how dirty 3-gun gets, as I've only tried a practice session once. Honestly, though, I tend to be more of a leisure-oriented, precision, slow-fire target shooter, like a lot of people. Not sure if I would ever end up competing or not, but I want to know what options to consider, depending on what I choose.
Decisions, decisions!
