I was on the SIGARMS website and it seems that the P228 is no longer officially listed... The 229 has replaced it.

Can someone tell me if they are still made for the US Military (M11 pistol). They are still my favorite Sig Sauer pistol:

Mine are still Prohib 12.6 but can be transfered to someone at a later date with the 106mm barrels I have for them. I prefer the original 98mm barrels. ;)

Any info on their current manufacture status would be appreciated.
 
Sig USA is no longer marketing the 228, but there still is a 228 available in Germany. For the North American LE/Military/civillian market, the 228 is now the 229 in 9mm. This is what Sig USA told me a few weeks back.
 
the main difference is the alloy vs steef frame? Other than the basic cosmetic changes on the slide they are identical to the 229.

P228

P228A compact version of the P226, the P228, is also respected worldwide and is currently in use with the US military (notably with the Army CID, Air Force OSI, and Naval Aviation), designated the M11 and is also the standard issue handgun of the Swedish Police. The P228 has a shorter slide and barrel than the P226. Unlike the P226, the P228 is available only in 9 mm Luger Parabellum. The P229 is nearly identical to the P228, but it has a one piece solid steel (vs. the P228's carbon stamped steel) slide and is available in 9 mm, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. From a distance, the P228 can be differentiated from the P226 by comparing the trigger guards (the P228's is curved, while the P226's is slightly hooked) and the barrel and slide lengths (the P228's barrel is 12.7 mm shorter, thus having a corresponding shorter slide). Also in a side by side comparison the P228 would appear slightly shorter (2.5 mm shorter) than the P226. The larger capacity P226 magazine can also be employed in the P228 although it extends from the base of the grip. It is also available in the Ladies Escort version with an adapted trigger for women with extra small hands.
 
I tried changing all the entries on Wikipedia but I gave up when I came to that one because I was bored with it.

The Swedish police do not use the P228, they use the P225. There is no "ladies escort" version, that was a model gun made in Japan I think, but there is a short trigger.
 
Wikipedia is horrible. Anyone can write virtually anything and people take it as fact.

Anyway, the difference between the P228 and P229 is all in the slide. Frames are the same. The P229 slide is about 3 oz heavier than the P228.
 
Excellent pistols, to me the best of the Sig line. There really isn't a downside to them. Much better feel than the 226, and no real accuracy loss.

Sig replaced the 228 with the 229 because the 228's stamped metal slide was not strong enough for the higher operating pressures of the .357 sig and .40 rounds. The 226 stamped steel slide was replaced with a milled slide in 1996 to also chamber these rounds. The 228 was adopted as the M11 by the US military primarily for military police cid and eod. The M11 sig has introduced is a version of this in the vein as the civilian MK25 the difference between this and the orignal 228 are the updated srt trigger and a milled slide instead of a stamped one.

Well, why not? Just last week I obtained a Norinco NP-34...their clone of the Sig 228. I like Sigs and I wanted an inexpensive 9mm, so it was a natural choice. However I like this gun so much that I'd seriously consider getting a genuine SIG in .40S&W/.357Sig to go with my P226 in .40 and my new P227. The NP34 fits in my hand even better than the two larger guns and I simply love shooting it...but then I've always been a fan of compact pistols.
