How many barrel conversions can a Sig Sauer P226 take?

I have a .40 P226 right now, and a barrel for 9mm.

Is it as simple as swaping out the barrel, and then hammering out 9mm rounds with a 9mm magazine of course. (My 9mm boolits won't stay loaded in my .40 magazines)

It is possible to put a .45 ACP barrel in a P226? a .45 ACP Magazine? If so, that would be just AWESOME.....

Tagged for interest. Is the conversion kit a requirement or just the barrel and a proper magazine? What about with the P226R Classic?

IIRC, if you have a .40 (and maybe a .357, I'm not sure) all you need is a .357(/.40) or 9mm barrel and for the 9mm a mag (IIRC, .357Sig is based off .40, and shares a mag with it), you only need a conversion kit if you have a 9mm or a .22 and want to make it .40 or .357 (or 9mm in the case of a Classic .22), and of course no matter your calibre you need a conversion kit for .22LR (unless that's what you started with).

After a bit of research, I did find this on the SIG SAUER Website

"Centerfire (Spring) Kits (9mm,.357 & .40) are intended for use on .22 Classic Framed Pistols. Sig Sauer does not guarantee or advocate the use of .40/.357 kits on standard centerfire 9mm frames. "

http://www.sigsauer.com/CustomerService/Faq.aspx

So I'm going to "assume" that a .40 framed SIG will use similar or compatible parts (Springs) for 9mm and that using a 9mm barrel, and a 9mm magazine will be suitable for conversion. I did see that QUESTAR offers a 9mm P226 spring kits, and a .40 S&W P226 Spring kit in their catalog online.

I ended up ordering some P226 9mm MEC-GAR Magazines from MARSTAR in 9mm that John had in stock. And at 34.95 each, they are a great deal. Looking forward to getting them and trying them out.

They fit and work on the centerfire frames. It's supposed to be the exact same frame so I'm not sure what the difference is. When you buy the kits, it comes with the whole slide assembly (spring, barrel, mag) so I don't see an issue here. I use the 10rd MecGar mags, just don't drop them due to the plastic base. The factory 40cal mags (Checkmate) will function in your 9mm pistol allowing you more rounds, LEGALLY as well. Other brands do not work. Just the Checkmate ones.

With the 9mm 226 to go to 40, you need to swap out the barrel, spring and mag. The spring tension is different. Don't try anything that might be dangerous.

From what I read over at SIGforum, my understanding is:

- You can go from 357 to 40 (and vice-versa) with a barrel change only.
- You can go from 357 or 40 to 9mm with a conversion barrel.
- You cannot go from 9mm to 357 or 40 with a barrel only, you need the whole slide assembly.

YMMV :)

When my wife bought the Sig P226 SAS for my 40th Birthday, (.40 for my 40th and I can't wait for 50 now) she actually bought it off a GUNNUTZ member. It came with a spare Factory 9mm Sig barrel, but no mags. Luck of the draw.

Like I mentioned earlier, Questar seems to be the best place for SIG parts and they do carry barrels, but they are expensive. Unless someone else knows where to get SIG parts...

What type and where did you get the conversion barrel Dutchie? I would like to get one for my wifes 226.

This is correct; the breech face, extractor, and ejector are different for 9 and 40/357.

This is why I bought the 9mm 226 and purchased the entire X-Change Kit for 40. I could have just purchased the 357 barrel on the EE and got another caliber (as I had everything I needed) but I chose not to. I ended up selling the X-Change kit on the EE as I preferred my HK USP 40 in that caliber. There was nothing wrong with the 226 in 40 but I love my HK.

If you a want sig in 45 check out te Sig 227 it's basically a 226 chambered in 45

Or a 220 which is a 45. Also 22 kits are available and the 220 has been made in 9mm as well. 220 is a single stack pistol. Love my 220 & 226. Both have great ergonomics and the 220 has a slightly slimmer grip (than 226 with E2) for those with smaller hands.
