I currently have a Holosun red dot on my pistol (I plan to repurpose that to something else) so I'm looking at optics with bigger windows as the Holosun was a little small / boxy.

Trijicon SRO would be the easy button as it would fit on my adaptor plate (same footprint as the SRO) but the SIG Romeo XL & Max look impressive.

The windows look crazy big so should be real easy to use / pickup (something I'm struggling with after running irons for so long). Does anyone have any experience with these?

What is the difference between the XL & Max (it looks like the XL is bigger - XL is 1x35 & the Max is 1x30)? Are both suitable for pistol? From the sales literature I have read it feels like the Max is geared towards pistols (was developed by Max Michele specifically for pistols) and the XL is marketed as an all rounder which could be used on a pistol?

How do they compare to the SRO? The Max is more SRO looking whereas the XL is a little more angular but I think the bigger window would be good.

I'm thinking of 6 MOA dot (5 MOA for the SRO).

Take a look at the C-More RTS2 also. All of the red dots with wider windows aren't much more useful for target/competition shooting than the tiny compacts IMO. More useful for carrying as they're lower profile, less likely to get snagged on things, but that's not really a consideration up here. If you're running it on a pistol, you're WAY more likely to lose a dot vertically than horizontally. I really like the window shape of the C-More railway/slideride, but they're big and awkward. Tough to mount on a typical OR pistol slide. The RTS2 has a similar window size to the railway but on a compact frame. The SRO is similar. Round windows maybe look kinda goofy, but I think they're the most useable shape for fast acquisition.

If you want a dot with a big window you should also check out the Shield RMSx.

I have a 4 MOA version on a PDP and really, really like it. Before selecting the RMSx I tried a Leupold DPP (sat too high making weight distribution weird for mag changes)) and an Aimpoint ACRO C2 (small lens and very thick housing).

I know everyone's opinion is subjective but I just find the RMSx to hit the sweet spot for me. Big lens and the housing does not obscure the target. It might not be bombproof like the ACRO but it does not need to be for my purposes.

SRO, Romeo XL, RTS2, Leupold DPP are all solid options.
Window size matters, especially the vertical dimension: if the dot stays visible during the recoil cycle, it helps to shoot faster.
Length matters too: Romeo XL is too big for Shadow 2 OR slide cut, IIRC.
I am very happy with DPP

Thats great info as the Romeo XL was high on the list. Guessing the Romeo Max is the same (maybe not as it geared more towards pistol use from what I see, the XL seems to be marketed for all round use including rifles etc).

Agree about the vertical dimension being important.

I did some more digging on this and you did indeed remember correctly, the Romeos are too big to fit the Shadow 2 OR, as is the FTP Alpha 3.

Fast Toys sells adaptor plates that are taller so the optic clears the slide but it looks high / awkward.

The RMSx looks pretty good, where did you get yours from?

From what I can tell the RTS2 (like the Sig XL) is too big to fit on a Shadow 2.

Looking more & more like the SRO is the easy button.......

The rts2 will fit on the S2or if you have the CZ plate for it. But hands down the Sig Romeo 3XL has the biggest glass hands down, just requires a little material removed from the slide as it is just a little longer in the front.

Sig Romeo 3XL. Vs FYP Alpha

Sig Romeo 3max and cmore are similar to alpha

Sums it up pretty well, the Romeo XL is the biggest of the bunch but while it is wider it doesn't look much taller (if any) than some of the other offerings out there however it still looks like the best bet of all the optics.

From what I see a decent amount of material would have to be removed from the slide to get it to fit, or, a taller mount like this (think Fast Toys was offering these) would get around the issue:
