Hey everyone, got a 550 coming to me soon and had an idea to possibly get the metal parts on it cerakoted bronze. Has anyone had their 550 cerakoted, if so, any recommendations on a place to get this done?

Thanks

If it ain't broke. Don't fix it.

Yeah, just like how Henry Ford laid out the perfect car-colour in 1909, and that's why all today's vehicles are black.

Hmm, wait...

OP, I've used Black Box customs in the past (are they a sponsor here? I know CSC carries their stuff) with good results.

Or you could just go for the rustic look and rattle can it yourself with krylon. ;)

Not sure why you'd have your chamber done, but I doubt that a Cerakote applicator would 'spray OD paint all over the inside'. That said, if something's wrong with your Cerakote, you should get it fixed. Those companies have good reps, and all it would take is a phone call to get it resolved. Faster than talking smack on CGN.

  • depends what part of the chamber he is talking about, but if you are getting work done, my guess is they sandblast the whole thing and spray the whole thing.
  • that said, cerekote shouldnt be any thicker than the stock anodizing (i could be wrong here, but its a super thin layer nonetheless), and shouldnt cause any FTE/FTF
  • ive used blackbox on several projects and havent had any issues - pistols and ar15's - would use again, and will once my war sport upper comes in. my biggest issue was trying to color match to another slightly used rail (think trying to fill chips on your car with color matched paint, its pretty difficult to nail).
  • i agree with galexon, get in touch with them, you and your range buddy, and report back - this is where customer service matters. id hate to see a local guy, who i like, get bashed as hard as NS does in their threads/forum.
  • lastly, if there is overspray anywhere, straight up, the QC should be upped for sure

problem is I had a problem the first time it got sprayed, and they fixed it and I was thankful, then I received it this time and everything looked good but my chamber was sprayed. I won't bring it in a third time. The guys there are great people and professional, but it just left a bad taste in my mouth. Its not bashing anyone if its true. Like any business doesn't matter what it is there is always gonna be a mishap. It is what it is. They have probably done a million jobs and done it perfectly I bet, just didn't work out for me is all. Just throwing out my experience.

What type of firearm did you get cerakoted?

I recently dropped off the slide to my SFP9 to get cerakoted. They do the inside and outside, I was assured that there wouldn't be any operational impact from the coat.

Black Box Custom painted my chamber, and I didn't notice it, went out shooting and kept on getting FTE. Looked in my chamber and there was olive drab paint all over the inside. Those FTE jammed my discharged rounds into my receiver and messed up my paint job. Went to the range a couple days later and the same thing happened to another guy who went there. I was happy with my job until that happened and after I saw it happen to another guy, it doesn't look good. Heard a few other stories from others as well.

Fair enough. Hope you get sorted. If they don't have a CGN rep (they should) try emailing them. Let us know

This is the first I've heard of BBCustoms.... their website looks pretty slick. Great photos and seems to be decent pricing.

$150 to mill your slide for RMR and make it work is pretty reasonable. Also $200 for a rifle to Cerakote is cheap!
