I need to move the POI laterally about 4 inches at 50 yards. The rear sight is a fixed dovetail with elevation adjustment only. I know I need to tap and move the dovetail. Wondering if anyone can suggest where to start - 1/16, 1/32, 1/64 inch??? I've only ever sighted scopes with 1/4 MOI per click so really don't know where to start with this fixed dovetail.

No point in trying to calculate measurements. Make a very small scratch with a sharp instrument to use as reference, tap and try.
I don't like to scratch my rifles so I use a Sharpie, they can be bought in many colours at the dollar store.
the math is not hard
4 divided by 1800 (50 yards x 36 ") equals 0.0022
multiply that by the distance between the front and rear sight to get the distance that the sight has to move. 18 inches between sights means you move it by 0.04" (1/25th inch) For 12 inches between sights, you would need 0.027" (a bit more than a 32nd of an inch)
