I've got an 18" wingmaster with a polychoke, and a standard brass bead sight. I want the XS big dot, but they seem to be sold out everywhere.
My goal is to be able to fire slugs up to 50 yards with reasonable accuracy.
What options are there? I also like the standard adjustable rifle sights found on some barrels, and then there's also ghost ring sights.
So my question is, what are the best options for sights? Is a gunsmith required, which does it? What's your experience?

It's pretty hard to beat the Remington rifle sights for a do-all setup IMO, although I'm not sure how cost effective it'd be to have a set installed?

You might be best off just to buy a 2nd barrel with factory rifle sights.

I agree with 870P, I have used bead, ghost ring and rifle sights on an 870 and I prefer the rifle sights over all of them. Especially the ones with the fiber optic sights, they would be my go to for slugs out to 50yds. The most convient way is to pick up a seperate barrel with them already installed, then you can swap between them when you want. Sometimes a bead sight is nice.

^^^^^^I agree with you both, the Remington barrel mounted rifle sights are the best, infact I used to have a police barrel.
However, right now the barrel I have is a wingmaster with a polychoke attached, and I want it as a sort of "do all" barrel. I don't wanna spend $220 for another smoothbore barrel JUST for the sights.
So what I'm looking for is an option that I can use on my current setup.

Sell your current barrel and buy one with rifle sights, it will be the closest you'll get to a do all barrel imho. The one I have is 20" with rifle sights and it's threaded for chokes, it's my default barrel as it will do pretty much anything. Birdshot, buckshot, slugs and it's short enough to hike through thick bush and would be good in close quarters.

50 yards with slugs is pretty doable with a bead as long as it's well regulated, I have an Ithaca with a fiber optic bead that will easily hang with my rifle sighted 870 to at least that distance with slugs.

Mind you, the Ithaca has a longer barrel, which seems to help with fine shooting with a bead, and the extra visbility of the fiber dot helps as well, but 50 yards is not particularly challenging in any event.

You may be able to get away with just a replacement fiber bead setup, either a gunsmithed one or a clamp-on if money is an issue.

The more I use ghost rings the more I prefer rifle sights.

I wish the Remington rifle sights were a bit lower though so I didn't have to raise stock comb a bit.
