Hello all. I recently came to be in possession of a Win 1895 chambered in 303 British. Does anyone have a suggestion for a better rear sight that can be fitted to it? Ideally one that doesn’t require drilling holes in a vintage rifle. It’s not much of a collector piece and I’m not really much of a collector but still feels wrong to molest something that’s been around so long. I have read that some came from factory with holes for the lyman sight but I’m not sure if this one does. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance. I have a 95 that at one time had a Lyman 21 or Climbin Lyman as they were called. Long gone but shadow in the blue is visible from where it sat for years. The front screw for the Lyman 21 uses the existing hole for the lever pin stop screw. It is the uppermost hole in left side of receiver. The rear hole must be drilled and tapped. I put a vintage 102d Redfield made for the 1895 on mine, required drilling and tapping 2 6/48 holes at rear but covers the existing tapped hole for the Lyman 21.
Providence Tool Company makes a replica of the Lyman 21, comes with drill and tap for rear hole. Yours is a gray gun so not a lot of value to collectors. If it were mine and I wanted to hunt with it I wouldn't hesitate to mount one.

I have one of the Providence Tool Lyman 21 sights and they are top notch. The guy in charge of providence tool is a good guy to deal with and the process was easyIMG_1633.jpeg

Thanks for the replies, I do like the model 21 and may have to go that direction. My goal is just to make it a little more practical for hunting and I like the adjustability for range which some of the other options don’t have.

Lyman 21 or a tang sight that uses the existing hole. Some tang sights will require you to drill a second hole, but there are ways around that.

I do normally like the skinner sights, I’m liking the idea of having some elevation adjustment in this case though. I’m fairly familiar with using diopter type sights so I feel like I could make use of them to take advantage of the extra range the 303 can afford vs more mainstream lever cartridges.
