Hello folks, looking for recommendations for some sort of optic sight for my Ithaca 37 DS Police special. I will be using it forwild boar and am thinking that an illuminated reticle with both eyes open possibly is a good starting point for a wish list. The barrel has scope mount notches around the rifle sight area and these would either make for a long eye relief scope or a cantilever mount.

You can just see the grooves here! They show up as lighter than the rest of the rear sight!

If you are referring to the dovetail notches in the barrel then I would seriously consider a good set of "rifle" type sights. Check out XS sights. TruGlo also offers some nice fibre optic sights.

Where the rear sight is mounted on the barrel are 4 grooves of a dovetail pattern which would suit the claws of a traditional scope mount. I am looking really for something that is quick and can be used both eyes open if possible. Otherwise I would just buy another leupold scope with sympathetic reticles.

Shotguns have a relatively short effective range, even with slugs. Anything outside 150 yards and you're pushing the envelope. Is a shotgun capable of hits beyond that? Most definitely. Are the chances of a first round hit worth the risk of taking the shot? I'd say no. I would still stick with some nice rifle type sights for the shotgun. You can shoot with both eyes open for the fast in close shots. Same concept as a single front bead. If you're set on an optic, I would stick to something in the lower magnification range, nothing more than 5 or 6 power and something that offers a fast reticle and a wide field of view on low power.

I have a Trijicon 'Reflex' sight, along with an XS ghost ring sight on my 870 (both lend themselves to 'both eyes open' snap shooting):

The optical sight needs to be dismounted in order to use the ghost ring sight, but once the optical sight is off (takes only a couple of seconds), the ghost ring easily sights through the lenghtwise groove in the picatinny rail.

Both sights are great pieces of kit.
