Took my M38 out the other day and put a few rounds through it. Shes shooting about 6inches high and 6 inches to the left at 50M. Now fixing the windage is no problem I'll just drift the front sight. But what can a do about the rifle shooting high? The sights are not adjustable for elevation.

The sights are not adjustable for elevation.

Perhaps you mean that the rear sight is as low as it can go. They are adjustable.
They were " designed " to shoot high . Although 6" at 50 yards seems like a lot.

I read that they were also designed to be fired with the bayonet out as the barrel harmonics change when the bayonet is folded back.

I realize that the rear sight is adjustable for elevation in 100m graduations. But when set at 100m(lowest setting) it shoots 6 inches high. My 91/30 only shoots 1/2-1 inches high at the same range. Also its a M38 not a M44 no provision for a bayonet on these carbines.

you can use a Q-tip to make the front post taller. Cut the Q-tip to size, colour it black and slide it over the post. Its a quick fix but for the range it will make things much less frustrating

My Mistake. I thought that all the Mosin Nagants had bayonets.

I seem to remember that there was a thread a while back about replacement front sights that are higher to allow then gun to shoot lower. Does your front sight come out and can it be replaced or made higher ???

Is that my only solution.

The only 2 solutions I can think of are lower the rear sight ( N/A on yours ) or raise the front sight.

Have a look on Youtube . Seems to a common problems with fixes available.

If you are good at metalwork you can shave down the sliding base on the rear site .I have also welded on a new front site post then filed it down at the range. Both will work being 6 inches high at 50 you are probably better off increasing front site.If you change the ammo you are using point of impact can change again. If you have settled on the load you are using adjust ,if not get your groups loads etc. figured first then adjust once.
