Sighting in Rifle

I was sighting in my new Remington 700 today. This is the first precision rifle I've ever owned. I was doing the usual thing I've read about how to sight in the rifle. Only it got a little complicated. I ran out of clicks on both the elevation and windage adjustments.

How do I fix this? I'm using a Bushnell scope and not toally familiar with the dynamics of this scope. A friend said I may have to take it to a gunsmith and get them to file part of the rifle down so the scope sits better.

Any advice?

I'm using the Millett "see thru" scope mounts. Got them at Lebaron.

I'd say I'm around 4-6 mildots left and 7-8 left. I honestly lost count how many clicks. I am maxed out on both adjustments.

All brand new stuff.

Was sighting in at 50m (approx).

Try jockeying around the rings, reverse them and/or turn one around...if this doesn't work you will have to use a shim inside rear ring, at the shop we run into this alot and have adhesive backed shims for this purpose......figure out where the shims go....top and right? Bottom and left?(shim should only cover 1/2of inside of ring)

Reverse the Rings . . .
Reverse the bases . . .
Both have worked for me in the past.
Don't forget to Lap the scope rings, and finally, if all else fails,
a scope shim kit.
And a little luck

"...ran out of clicks..." It's not mounted properly. Pitch the excessively high 'see-thru' mounts. Have regular bases and rings put on and the scope bore sighted.

I agree it is not mounted properly...
...you should take it to someone experienced with installing bases and rings correctly. Most of the "I did it myself" jobs I see are done terribly...

First I would have to say your friend is a Bubba. His advice to take it to a Gunsmith is sound, but don't let him take a file or any othe tool to your rifle.

Toss the See Thru mounts as far as you can into the closest deep body of water. Get a set of Burris Signature rings with offset inserts and pay a gunsmith to mount the scope for you.

I don't think you mentioned what model Bushnell scope you are using, there are Bushnell scopes and there Bushnell piles of S***

I had a similar issue with the same set of rings. I asked advice on this board in December and decided to go with the Burris Signature rings and I had the local smith install them and bore sight the scope. He did a great job and the scope has lots of adjustment. Given that I'm fairly new to target rifle shooting I figured it was best to get it properly installed so I would know that any problems shooting would need to be corrected between the trigger and the seat and not the rifle;)

Here is a problem that can have you guessing.....LOL....not that I know, or anything....

Is your scope mounted ELEVATION knob on top, WINDAGE knob on the right when viewed from the rear????

Not that I'd know about this problem, or anything....

Hey guys. Sorry for taking a few days to reply to the topic. Thanks for the many opinions. Such an overwhelming dislike to the "see through" mounts can't be wrong. I'll grab some new ones next time I'm at Lebaron or Bass Pro.

I tried turning the mounts around and a number of configurations, still no success. I'll probably take the advice, grab the new mounts and have them mounted by somebody with experience. And yes, they were mounted with the adjustment knobs in the correct place.

My scope is a Bushnell Legend 5-15 40x.

Thanks for the help.

see throughs are NOT required for paper punching so unless you plan on hunting with this rig... I'd pitch them... taking metal off of the receiver is not a good option for this particular problem, many of the other suggestions are good, including getting someone like a smith to deal with it... I believe the Burris rings would be a good option for you... it sounds like you've got limited travel in elevation so keep in mind if you're setting this up for very long distance you might not be able to get back to a 100 zero if you slip your turret to that setting. by long I mean 1000 yds.
