Hi all. Just bought a new slug barrel for my 870.To sight the rear sights in, Ive been told to use a brass drift for the windage. Is there anything else you can use instead of this tool, that will be safe on the steel? Also does anyone know if that Tasco Red Dot sight at Canadian Tire is worth puting on a shotgun? Don't want to be resighting every few shots. Thanks for any info boy's

yes a red dot makes a good optic on a shotgun or a rifle. because of no magnification there is no need for precise eye relief therefore a cantilever mount on a shotgun works well with a red dot since sometimes the eye relief will be greater with this system depending on the model.generally the rear sight adjusts your elevation and the front sight moves left to right for windage,or right to left.you can also get a pusher to move the front sight. sir mailorder has them or just take your 870 to your local gunsmith. a shotgun can have the reciever drilled and tapped and an appropriate size mounting rail can be used to mount a red dot or a regular scope.

Hi 12magnum. Thanks for the info.I have to take it out and sight it in,but Ive never had open sights before. Always used a scope. Talked to the guys at the local gun shop all they said you only move the front sights if you run out of room moving the rear ones.It should be fun cause I have no idea how far to move them at all. They also said you use a brass drift punch to move them.Try to find one. Any other tools for this? Thanks again for your help

Hi apple!

The sights on my 870 are adjusted by loosening an allen screw. drift punch only for the front sight, which should be left alone under normal circumstances.

If you don't find a drift punch, make one! Get some small diameter brass rod ( RC model shop) which you epoxy into a small wood handle ( like a piece of broom handle), if you ever need one for the sights. It is useful the remove the 2 receiver pins.

Sighting in

Thanks for all the info guy's.I went to Princes Auto and got a set of brass punches. Open pack of 5 for $4.99.This is a Mossberg replacement barrel made for the 870.It is fully rifled and has adjustable sights. I was told at the local shop to adjust the rear dove tail with the brass punch. Can anyone confirm that this is the correct way, with this barrel model? Now I've been told to move the front sight by some.I beleive you move the rear until you run out of room.Only then would the front sight be adjusted.Going out this weekend to sight in. Hope I'm write. Thanks guy's

If Cnd Tire is still selling the same red dot as a year ago it's intended for a .22
I bought one and it does work great on my .22 - just not sure about putting it on something that recoils like a 12 guage...
