Sighting in?

I went to the range with my 270 on Thursday.

It's shooting 1 1/2 inch groups two inches above the bull'e eye at 100 yards and 1 5/8 inch groups 3 1/2 inches below the bull at 200 yards.

My buddy is giving me heck now, telling me I should have centred for 200, so I can shoot out to 300 knowing where I'll hit all along the way.

I think I'm fine. I rarely ever ever shoot anything beyond 100 yards anyway.

But should I go back and centre for 200 yards and learn to live with possibly a 3-inch high group at 100?

I really prefer to be between 1 1/2 inches high and 2 inches high at 100.

sight in how you want, not how someone else wants you to

1.5-2" high at 100 yards is good for most cartridges.

You are the one that will be hunting with the rifle,so if you are comfortable with the point of impact at 100 yards, don't worry about what others say. However,I am curious as to the load that you are using,as that does seem like a lot of drop at 200 yards, given the 2" high at 100 yards.

see the large bold type. Opinions are like arse-holes. Everyone's got one. Go hunting.

I don't know what loads you are using in your .270, but it sounds like you might be using a round nose bullet which given the ranges you shoot at is perfectly adequate. Don't get fooled into sighting too high at close range. As you have pointed out the majority of your game is taken within 200, and probably that is true of the vast majority of us.

I was hunting caribou once with a .270 sighted 4" high at 100. I took a shot at a small bull who turned out to be closer than I thought, and I put the horizontal wire right on the line of his chest thinking the bullet rise would give me a perfect heart shot. The bullet went right where I aimed because the boo was small and closer than I thought. Upon examination of the spot where he stood, there was a bit of hair clipped off, but no blood - and neither was there another opportunity that day.

I supect it would be determined by country where you hunt. In the bush I could get away with being sighted in a 50 yards which would not be the best for the bald prairie.

They are 150 grain Hornady Interlock spire point bullets pushed by 57 grains of H4831 SC powder.
