Ok - so I bought a Burris Fullfield II scope (3x9x40) and swapped it with the old Bushnell on my .270.

I go out to sight this thing in and at 100 yards its shooting WAY high - like about 18-20 inches. The scope is dialed as far down as it will go. Windage is good, no problems there.

Any ideas? Do I need a shim or something to correct this, or is there something fundamental that I have missed?

Thanks!

If the other scope worked ok , then check to make sure the Burris is completely seated. My rule is, do every thing else before thinking of shimming. Was the scopes elevation and windage centered before mounting? Was the original scope ok;if so you then have a good reference for when you bore sight your scope prior toshooting it.(you did reference your old scope before you took it off ?) good luck; 99times out of 100 its not the scope.

I don't pretend to know much about sighting in a scope, but when I had problems with mine, this old Huderite told me that sometimes they scopes do not react properly to your adjustments, so give the dials a solid tap after you dial them in. Granted, my scope wasn't exactly high end, but after he took it, tapped it a few times, she shot true.

Did you change mounts or rings? I once had similar prob when replaced one mount to accomodate a shorter scope and the mount turned out to be taller. Luky me I bought two of them just in case so I replaced the other one as well and it's all good.

The rings and mount are the same ones from the old scope. I'll take it off again tonight and reset everything back and shoot it again tomorrow. We'll see what happens....

I didn't think it would be that different since the 2 scopes are similar in size and shape.

Oh well, gives me an excuse to go and shoot tomorrow

If that doesn't play out for you, try switching rings around, you may gain just enough to give you a few extra clicks.

Try a set of Burris rings with offset inserts. Easier than shimming. If you have to tap your dials after you adjust them, get a new scope.
