Not trying to be a douche, however I have to go out in southern MB to sight in rifle this sat. Already did this job once. Let me just say I will not be letting someone inexperienced ever attempt to hold and shoulder my rifle again. They I'm not gonna say male or female had the rifle on shoulder with sling and taking it off shoulder dropped it. GRRRR. I couldn't move fast enough and scope hit the corner of wall. It doesn't look damaged, but I am not taking any chances it was a good whack. I am apologising to the muzzle hunters now. Last year did the same during muzzle and after my first few shots I here a bang from very close in bush. Seemed I scared deer over to where someone was posted and he got his buck.

I had to do the same 2 days ago. Sometimes it is not possible to find a spot where no one is hunting, I however was using a sand pit that didn't have any other roads near by. Most of the surrounding land was private. My question is how far does the crack of rifle fire travel in woods? If it doesn't travel any further than say 2km, then there is no need to worry about disturbing others.

I have guys sighting in within 1km of my blind/stand area frequently during ML AND rifle season, not too much during archery.

It doesn't effect the deer movement that I have noticed.Deer feel pretty safe when surrounded by trees and bush.

And , if you find a pit to sight in at how are you to know someone is hunting in the bush, some people just get too upset over things.I say have at it and do what you have to, it is a free country.

If I come across people near me sighting in when I am about to hunt I just say where I will be at so they know and say not to rush what they are doing.

I do hear shots from a further away spot probably 3 or 4 km.

I've had deer walk out 3-400 yards away out in the field while shooting trap here at the farm and when target shooting across that field with both a 270 and 2506 have had deer walk the bank only a few hundred yards behind our targets. Not once did they look up from either shotgun or rifle crack.

Deer get used to the noise.

Some (like the resident population on the Dundurn ranges) will walk out onto the range to graze while the live fire is going on.

People that whinge about shots that are not 'ear pain' close, are looking for someone to blame for their having a bad day.

Worst case scenario (and one that I relied upon as productive, road hunters and truck hunters have their uses) is that the guys thrashing around and making noise in the bush while they sight in (that'd be you) may well stir up and move some of the deer that would not have otherwise been moving at that time of day.

Whowzat?

Find a safe place, and do what is legal.

Cheers

Why wouldn't you go to a spot where no one is hunting?

x2 Find a sandpit or somewhere out of the way. Nothing has pissed me off more than walking in a "secluded" area and hear a rifle go off a couple hundred meters away.

I bet it wasn't rifle or muzzleloader season when that happened. I've routinely had this happen in the Spring and getting close to Fall but they know when it's hunting season.
