Am looking at purchasing either a Nightforce 5.5-22 NSX, or the Sightron 6-24, both in 50 mm objective size, and looking for opinions on anyone who has used or been exposed to the Sightron scopes for their opinion on them? Thanks..

Caramel - What Sightron scopes have you used/own? What would you compare the quality to?

OP - Not intending to highjack your thread - wondering about Sightron scopes as well.

I have 4. Prefer the NF but not at twice the price. Figure Sightron is at least 80-90% of NF for half the price.

I've owned three so far. An S-III 10-50X60 an SII big sky 3-9X42 and currently an 8-32X56.
I've looked through NF glass and couldn't notice a difference, I'm told it's the superior product but I don't feel I'm missing much.
I can tell you the adjustments on the Sightron are accurate, durable and repeatable, and after much spinning of the elevation turrets they still track just as good as new.
Important to consider if you're shooting at different ranges and dialing often.

For the record the SII Big-Sky 3-9X42 that I owned didn't impress me.
I bought it for all the rave reviews it got on the 'net, but I was disappointed in the optical quality.
IMHO the S-III is where it's at in the sightron line-up.

That's a pretty superb review. I've been eyeing up one of those 10-50x60s for my .22 bench rifle, and that pretty much seals the deal on it. Thanks!

Mine is a fixed power, did not know really what to buy and Jerry from Mystic told me for LR work that Big Sky 36X would be a good match for my Icon P.H. 6.5 Creedmoor, they make a great combo indeed, i find it so good i am always swap it from rifle to rifle, it is for the mean time on top of my Nemesis 308, clear and precise, good stuff... JP.

.22 as in rimfire or centerfire?
Careful with the 10-50X60mm, it's a pretty specialized piece of kit.
It is HUGE!, usually requiring extra-high rings and a seriously canted base.
You also lose a massive amount of windage and elevation travel as compared to the 8-32 or 6-24 power. If you are shooting a .223 at longer ranges and don't want to use a ballistic reticle you need lots of adjustment available.
I found cranking the magnification that you had to have perfect conditions or you'd get heat waves blurring your image, I rarely shot above around 25-30 power. I sold my 10-50 and went 8-32 and was very happy.
Do your research and good luck!

Thanks for the luck! It is indeed a 22 Rimfire, and thus will likely never shoot beyond 200-300 yards. However most shooting will occur at or below 100 yards, and having the magnification and 1/8 clicks makes life very easy. The scope will fit, and will sit upon a 20 MOA base, so elevation adjustment isn't a critical issue, and neither is windage.

Regardless of that, optical quality and repeatable adjustments are critical, and if it has that, I'm more than happy!

No comparison, the Night Force kicks butt!!

Kewl...no comparison? please elaborate?
They kick butt on the battlefield hunting Taliban or at the bench at the local range?
I would agree that they are more robust and have some nice reticle choices, but they don't blow an S-III out of the water optically and Sightrons tracking is proven as well.
If you're spending a day at the range punching paper I think the Sightron compares rather favourably.
But hey, when you have to own the "best of the best"...skip the inferior NF and go straight to a S&B. :D

Ignore DB, he's got it in for Sightron Scope offerings for some reason.

For sure I'd prefer my S&B scopes over my Nightforces, no question. The OP didn't ask about S&B though.

No, I wouldn't say that is a fair assement. Sightron is a moderate quality scope at a moderate price. If you want to compare it to others of its ilk there are many that it is equal to or better than. The Nightforce is so far out of the Sightron's league it is laughable.

I use a sightron 8x32 for F-class. The scope tracks well and the optics are decent. If there is not a lot of mirage, I can see my 223 hits on target out to 300 Meters.

I have the same scope and use it for the same reason. I am also very pleased with mine!

It's interesting that there are those who love to compete and shoot with Sightron and offer their experinece and those that don't do anything and offer nothing.

Sightron has earned their place on the mound, with many winners using them. As stated all over the net in many evalutaions, they are "the best scope for the price" and optically comparable to Nightforce.

Peter

Dewberry is incorrect. Sightron III series in fact is optically superior to nf for some peoples eyes. The only thing sightron gives up to nf is ruggedness and that only maters if you are in theater somewhere. Sightron is plenty tough enough for hunting and is superb on any range. I use both nf and sightron.
