Sightron Scopes and Best Power

Sightron Scopes

I've used my Sightron SIII 8-32 at just under 1000 (916yrd) and it was great. No problem seeing the target and orange + on it. The Windage and elevation adjustments are very positive and repeatable.

IMHO, Great scope for the price.

Paper or rocks?

I compete with a 10-50. I plink with a 6-24 and 8-32.

I like to spot my own shots when shooting rocks so prefer the wider field of view with the lower mag scopes. I have no problem seeing the dust kicked up by a 80gr amax at 1400yds using the 6-24 on my Savage I can usually follow the bullet all the way to the target.

With paper punching, I don't care if I don't watch the trace to the paper. Here the extra mag really helps with precise aiming and being able to adjust 1/2" at 1000m is really a good thing.

I would say if paper punching, fixed 36X would be a min mag for 1000yd precision paper punching.

Actually Jerry, I would have tended to agree, but having used a Leupy 8.5-25 at 1000 extensively, I have absolutely no hesitations is saying never turn your nose up at a good 8-25X More is better for sure, but I can get the job done just fine with a 25X,

I used the Elite 4200 6-24 for years and put a variety of plastic on the wall so have no problem with shooters using any mag.

But the question was what is the best for 1000yds and for me, today, that min is 36X.

And to be even more specific, my min is the Sightron SII Big Sky 36X.

The only image problem I had with a Sightron was with one cheaper one (SII BigSky), there was some edge distortion at the very lowest mag. Otherwise I have really liked them, and probably will never buy anything else.

Not a long range shooter, but my understanding is that they tend to go with a variable power so they can back off the power when there are mirage issues. I have a Sightron II Big Sky 6-24x42, and I would think it is under powered for real long range. It is a nice scope though. My guess would be to go with a quality 30-36X variable, so you can back off when needed. Also need to watch the Sightron III's as some do not have 1/8 MOA adjustments.

Two questions , has anyone have experience with Sightron scopes and what is the best or adewquate power for 1000 yd shooting

I will skip the brand in here. IMO buy the best quality scope you can afford with biggest objective that fits your rifle, divide that by the factor of two and that's the maximum power you can use, the rest on top of it (the power) is just dressing and hype. Say your scope has 50mm objective then 25power is the max power for that scope b/c your eye pupil even with the best of light conditions will never shrink to less than 2mm. If your exit pupil is less than that the scope will be dim, FOV will be poor (especially on variable scopes) and eye to scope aligment will be difficult, period. 45x 45mm or 10-50x50mm scope? please, how stupid the manufactures think we are....Shooting with 25x scope at 1000yds equals to shooting with 1x red dot at 40yds, I say it would be enough for me. Hell some BP guys are shooting accurately at 1000yds with their 45-70s and open sites! My 2c.

I have experience with Sightron, awesome scopes for the money.

How good are your eyes? I shot at 1040 meters last winter, grouping just over 2 MOA using mil spec irons on my M1 Garand, so it all depends on how far your eyes are able to focus.

I find that the 20 power fixed is the best for me, but thats personal preference, and 20 power is more then adequate.

High power sounds awesome but I have to turn down the power because of mirage and can't use all that power anyway. Maybe it's just me. 15 seems to work well for me but I'm not saying higher isn't better.

Any variable power scope I've used at long range is cranked to the highest possible power. There would be no need for a 10 X 50 power scope if a 35 X 50 was available, or even a straight power 50. A 45X Leupold should work fine.
