Can someone school me on what sights belong on these old guns, and if they are easy to find used? Alternatives? I'm looking at one to buy but it has no sights.

Also what is fair value for these guns in various conditions, with/without sights?

Thanks

Mickeystew; If you can find which numbers you need, I may have what you are looking for.

FWIW, The 146b Mossy is one of the more accurate 22 rifles out there.
Largely overlooked by the "elite" crowd, but one of those hidden gems.

Does the one you are looking at have a round bolt handle, or a barrel shaped one?

Regards, Dave.

Ahh jeez I can't remember, it was in a gunshop I was in today, it was tagged for $200 and was in mint looking shape besides the missin sights. I do know I didn't see any dovetail for a sight I think it was all tapped holes. I'm wanting to say the handle was barrel shaped... But I'm not certain.

By barrel shaped do you mean the knob? The bolt knob was round not the t bolt handle like I've seen on some.

What are the differences between the two otherwise? I'd ideally like to put a receiver sight on it.

This dusty old 46M has both ramp and peep sights as well as the side mount scope.

They don't list every model but the majority of them are there. If you go to the bottom of the page and click on the arrow another page will come up and you can look at magazine cross references and a whole list of other things. I missed the second page arrow the first bunch of times I was on there because I never went to the bottom of the page.

Nice ! And all original to. Usually when guys refinish the stocks they screw up the curve on the cheek piece and round the edges or sand the top right tip out. Those are what I look for at the shows.

Go to Numrich Gun Parts. They have just about any part you need for the old Mossbergs and they ship here. I have a 146B(a) and they have every part for it. And BTW I'd pay $200 for that gun. You'd be hard pressed to find a more accurate .22

With all 3 sights they usually go for between $250 and $300 around the Toronto area. The sights can run you from $40 -60 each and sling swivels will be $30-40 a set depending on the seller, If your lucky and someone is selling not knowing what they have I have seen them as low as $125. If your buying one be sure to check the magazine tube for kinks/dents. Live and learn as they say.

I've been offered one with sights, I don't know if both rear or what, and sling for $350 plus shipping. That's too much yeah?

That's too high for me. Ask for a few pictures. If it's in great condition and has all 3 sights then it's at the top of prices. But as the saying goes if you want it and the price is within your budget go for it.You can always make an offer they can refuse.

Just saw you added a scope. If it's a Mossberg scope then it will bring the value up for sure. Again get some pictures.

The scope is a Werner? German made. The thing is I'm not really interested in the scope, and don't really care about the sling either... But I do want one with both sights and this one is complete and all original... I've got some thinking to do.

I noticed that the ones made pre-1951 have 4 or 5 grooves instead of 8 like the ones made from '51-'54. Does anyone know if either one is more accurate? and is it true that the t-bolt is only "usually" found on the earlier models?

Not sure on the difference in accuracy. I think they are both similar in accuracy from what I've seen. In T bolts there were only 4 made. They are 144, 142A, 146B and 142M. If I remember correctly they were only made in the late 40's to early 50's.
