Long time pistol shooter (iron sights), new to hi-power rifle, scopes etc., definitely no expert.
Starting to put together a Ruger No. 1 in 6.5 x 47 Lapua for hi-power silhouette, may also try some longer range out to 1,000 yards.
No big budget here. Currently thinking fixed ~20 power - the No. 1 is already on the heavy side for the Silhouette rules and I tend to just set a variable power scope on one setting and leave it there. Thinking a fixed power would be lighter and cheaper?
Comments, suggestions ?
TIA

I hope that you have better luck with Ruger No. 1 than I did - could not get any of mine much less than 2MOA - perfectly adequate for deer hunting as far as I would shoot at a deer, but not thinking is best choice for what you intend?

However, I think like you regarding scopes - I did use 2-7 and 3-9 for hunting in the past - almost always shot with whatever it was set at - at the time - so most all my hunting rifles now have Leupold 4X or 6X scopes - fixed power - can not say that I ever missed hitting, that I can blame it on the scope - and I have "missed" often.

Agreed - the Ruger No. 1's are kind of "hit or miss", some seem to have been able to "make them shoot", others not so much. Thought I'd try this one mostly because I have it and its paid for. Bought it used 35+ years ago as a 220 Swift. Couldn't get it to shoot any better than ~ 1.75" @ 100 yds. - put it away and its been collecting dust for ~30 years. Bore scopes came along, throat looks kind of fire cracked, started thinking of re-barreling and here we are today.
