I am thinking of getting into silhouette shooting next year, and was curious if my Bisley 44 would be a great gun to start out with. I know competition is stiff with TC's firing .308 and other wildcats, but would a set of precision sights (Bomar maybe) make my chances better. Any input would be appreciated....even input on silhouette shooting in general would be appreciated. :D

I am just dabbling in silhouette a bit this year myself. Although I have plenty of single shot pistols to use., there were guys using revolvers. Mostly 44mag, but one guy was shooting a 357 a while back.

You could just shoot what you have for the first while. There is plenty of technique to learn before you go for gold.

I just do it for fun, and I'm not very good either.

You might want to check the rules before you change the sights. Unless there has been a change you cannot alter the gun unless you are shooting in the "Unlimited" class. When I was shooting silhouette I used a Bisley in .41 mag for my standing class and found it to be quite adequate.

If you are shooting in "Revolver" class from the Creedmore position, you have to be real careful not to let the muzzle slip too far back on your leg--the owie is really hard to explain at the emergency room. You may also find that your accuracy at longer range will be better with a longer barrel(sight radius). I used a 629 DX with factory Bomar sights for a number of years and found it to be excellent.

There should be lots of used Xp-100's and TC's around if you decide to get into it. If you are looking for either of those guns send me a pm, I may be able to put you in touch with someone who has some for sale.

Regards, 44Bore

As soon as you make modifications, like optics and such, you'll be competing with guys that have guns that are tricked out. I compete with a plain old revolver. It is challenging and fun.

I find Silhouette shooting addictive. I love teh instant gratification of teh loud "Ding" and the falling metal. I think it beats paper punching anyday. Most folks at Silhouette meets are really friendly and very happy to see more peopel getting involved. Silhouette was far more popular in the past (at least out this way), and was quiet for a while. I notice now, and from what I hear from theold farts, that more people are getting into again.

It's only been a few years for me. I went out and watched, and had some guys let me try some stuff out. With out even asking, I had the opportunity to try a Super Redhawk in 44 mag with regular production sights, a T/C with a 10" barrel in .357 (I suck at that one), and a Remington XP-100 in 7mm TCU. Wow, did I ever love shooting that XP-100. Bolt actin handguns are simply awaesome. I hope to own a XP-100 one day so I can then compeet with my revolver and an XP.

Shot sillouhette here for quiet a while, competed with revolvers and Contenders (never did finish that custom XP100, still have the parts tho', so someday  ). I used S&W's, Rugers, Casulls and Dan Wessons. The DW's pretty much ruled the roost in production revolvers, you could get them from the factory with sight options that surpassed anything anyone else was offering at the time (Casulls were great too, but at 3X the price, they really were semi-custom guns). In revolver class the line is pretty thin though, a good shooter with a beat Blackhawk will whip an equipment junkie with the latest and greatest toy nine times out of ten. The Contenders really upped the ante as to what was possible from a handgun, and the XP's were more accurate then most rifles. It was a lot of fun, but it pretty much died out here and no one competes anymore. Too bad really. FWIW - dan
