Okay, my Rem M700 .223 dedicated earth pig hunter could use a makeover (on the cheap side).

I always despised that long 22" or 24" factory ADL barrel (took the sights off and gave 'em away). I'm only shooting up to 200 yards with this baby anyways so a shorter tube is in order.

What's the shortest length to remain legal ?

I realize that this may be a silly question, but I've always entertained factory length barrels for as long as I can remember.....

Cheers,
Barney

The rifle is a bolt action 700; 18" minimum. If it were semi auto then 18 1/2" would be the lower limit.
Overall length must exceed 26".

Allrighty then !! I measured the barrel to 24" and I figured if I cut 4.5" or 5", I can still be above 18.5"... Then I'll bring the barreled reciever into my local gunsmith for a stepped crown, just to finish 'er off !

Hey, maybe I should have it threaded for an AR15A2 flash hider. Might have to register it then... yuk yuk yuk It's not politically correct even if it is a black rifle (ADL M700) ha ha ha

Cheers and thanks everyone !

an 18" 223 is noticeably louder than a 24" 223.....I know first hand, but if you're using muffs it shouldn't matter......I picked one up last year that had been cut to 19".....now it wears a 26-1/2" pipe......much less muzzle blast and noise...

legaly you could put on a factory made barrel of any lenght sa long as the overall lenght is more than 24 1/2" or is it 26" not really that important since I don't think your going to find a short factory barrel and your talking about shorting an existing barrel.

You can not shorten a barrel shorter then 18 1/4" whatever that is in metric 470mm I think, and leave it a bit longer for crowning.

I have a project that I'm working on and I settled on cutting the barrel to 19" just to make sure everyting was good.
