I just bought a new semi for the purpose of getting into sporting clays. I live in Calgary and haven't going shooting since I moved here not long ago. I see that Silver Willow is close by and I have a few questions to anyone who's familiar it.

My days off work are pretty random and usually on weekdays so getting a group of people together to go with me isn't feasible. Can you go there and shoot solo? The website says the clay throwers are automatic and can be voice activated so it sounds like I could go by myself but want to make sure.

Do you need a reservation or can you drop in and use the course? I'm not planning on going weekends so I'd imagine weekdays aren't too busy.

Any other recommendations as far as where a newbie to shooting clays can go and practice without getting in the way of more experienced shooters would be appreciated, especially if it's somewhere that I can roll solo.

Hey there,

Most of your answers can be found here: http://www.silverwillow.ca/

Solo shooting is no problem - they can program your card with a delay between button push and target flight. I go whenever I can but rarely do I find myself tripping over other groups.

Take care and enjoy!

I have never really had an issue solo shooting without a reservation shooting during the week - but you might want to give them a call to see if they are busy day of (sometimes they run corporate groups, stags etc.). Its a great facility. let me know if you want someone to shoot with!

The Day family will bend over backwards to accommodate you! Awesome people, and a beautiful facility! Give them a call, they will be more than happy to answer all your questions!

Went there a few weeks ago for a bachelor party and have nothing but the highest praise for that facility. Bit pricey, but totally worth every penny! The damn rabbit is quick!

I think I was probably there the same weekend as RatFink with my friends - two of which have never shot any firearms before. One of them hit the rabbit 4 out of 4...a natural! A beautiful facility. I just wish I had more time to go and shoot. If I could, I'd be there every day!

Depending on which end of town you're in, the AHEIA range in DeWinton is way closer to the city than Silver Willow.

I'm in the deep SE (Copperfield), so it's literally a 15 min drive away...

Walk-ins are the norm, except when tournaments are going on. Membership is required, and there are range-fees on top of that.

I just went 3 week-ends ago for the 1st time... What a hoot ! And the staff are helpfull, and there's a great kitchen in the clubhouse.

is it just me or I was under the impression from the web site for the Calgary Firearms Centre that they only had trap and Skeet (haven't been yet to see for my self) and Silver willow is Sporting Clay, and I have to agree with hillbillyreefer the Day family are awesome. My wife spent quite some time on the phone with them in preping a B-day surprise for me. In fact that trip out to Silver willows is what has brought be back to the sport.
