Hi
came up with a simple jig to index the barrel :

I'm using a starrett precision machinist level 6inch to time the barrel to the receiver. The problem is that there is no large flat surface on which to put the level ! On the M1a there is a small flat behind the rear sight which this small jig can rest ..

basically i used some precision ground O1 flatstock ( bought from kbc tools ) and i drilled some holes for threaded rod .. tapped and picture speaks for its self.. you can make sure the flat is good by comparing it to a 3/8" in precision ground rod placed in the holes for the rear sight

now you have a nice flat to place the level

the key is to make dead sure it is flat... and de-burred ..... check it on your surface plate

to index the front sight there is a small flat where you put your front sight on ! with the springfield brake it was quite flat as worked in this case

- i used another piece of O1 precision ground flatstock and milled a small slot to fit around the dovetail ( you can easily do this by chain drilling a couple holes and using a chainsaw round file to eat out the metal for the slot... no need for a mill )
