I thought this would be the better forum in regards to sporterized Lee Enfields. In 1959 my father came to Canada and worked at Simpson/Sears in London, Ontario in the sporting goods department. At the time he really wanted to purchase one of the sporterized Lee Enfields that he sold in his department. I believe they were 10-$12 at the time. He could never afford it as he hardly made enough money to feed himself on those wages. Did anyone purchase one around that time? Were they factory sporters or was a specific company cutting them down? Was there a specific importer distributing to Simpson/Sears at that time? He did end up borrowing one and shot a moose later the following year. Does anyone remember these times or know of any info? Thanks, Peter H.l

I suspect Boomer's right. In 1959, Lee-Enfields were sold by the pound in surplus shops. Century was busy assembling thousands of bubba'd No. 1's and No. 4's out of parts bins with zero QC. A lot were sold with bad headspace because of the non-existent QC.
I remember seeing M-1 carbines being sold in Zellers. Most department stores got out of firearms altogether around 1978 when Trudeau's gang gave us the FAC and made selling firearms a nuisance for retailers. Both Eaton's and Simpsons sold handguns at one time too.
"...hardly made enough money..." That hasn't changed for retail workers. They still can't afford to buy much of anything on the well below poverty level wages they get paid.
