Hello - I'm studying for restricted PAL and have a revolver question since my former experience is exclusively with automatics. Is there a way to tell a single action from a double by observation alone? If the examiner says, "Pick up the single action pistol." for example. What can you look for?
Cheers. Eric

Good question! When I took my restricted PAL I had only the manuals to go by and had very little to no experience with revolvers. But it seemed to me that the SA revolvers were usually the older style break open and ones with gates (think western style cowboy action shooting) and DA/SA revolvers were the ones with swing out cylinders (think law enforcement types or the like). Since this was all I could figure at the time the instructor had one of each and I picked up the correct ones when asked. But I am sure some more knowledgeable members would be more qualified to answer your question than me.
P.S. I have owned DA/SA revolvers and find it very difficult to be accurate when attempting DA only. The trigger pressure required causes my hand to shake.

You can tell just by observation!! Single action revolver triggers are closer to the back of the trigger guard and won't fire till you #### the hammer. Once you #### the hammer, the trigger moves about half way in between the front of the trigger guard and the back of the trigger guard.

A double action revolver's trigger will already be in about the half way point of the front and rear trigger guard. Hope this helps.

When I did the course they told us before we started the test which was single action and which was double action. We just had to remember one from the other. On top of that the DA was a new style revolver and the SA was an old style cowboy revolver. It wasn't too hard to tell them apart.
